I just bought a tele body with electronics - it looks like the real deal but without the neck I can't tell if it is an American, MIM, or MIJ. Are there any markings, serial #s, etc that I could look for that might tell me what I really have. Thanks

Was it sold as being Fender?

The body has the original finish? There must be some stamps and stickers there, yep yep, please upload a couple pictures for us.

Generally if it's a Fender it would have been advertised as a mia, mim, mij or such as the value is greatly different. If it didn't say it, then it probably isn't a Fender. A lot of loaded bodies are sold as Fender Teles when there not even Fenders just because it nearly impossible to tell without the neck. There is usually a ink stamp in the neck pocket but with out a good picture to look at We can't tell. Pictures of the back of the pickups may help to match up some numbers

If someone puts a body preloaded with electrics up for sale I get suspicious. Where is the neck? Why is someone selling a fully loaded body without a neck? For that matter why would somebody BUY a body without a neck? Even if they were making a parts-ocaster why would they care if it's a genuine Fender body?

Why would that be an issue if it's a parts-ocaster?

I smell a rat.

YMMV

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Well, a lot of the bodies you see on eBay look like Fender bodies but when you try to bolt on a Fender neck you might find the neck pocket is sized wrong.

Or the neck holes, if drilled, aren't in the right places. Or maybe the body contours are wrong and a Fender pickguard doesn't look right on the guitar, especially around the cutaway.

Some cheapie bodies are also thinner than Fender bodies and originally came with those green rectangular "import" switches, so a real Fender switch is too deep to allow the control plate to fit flush with the body. I've personally had this problem and it's no fun.

Or the body could be drilled for some sort of unique bridge (like many Squiers are) and neither the vintage nor modern style of Fender Tele bridges will bolt right on without additional drilling.

Sorry to write a book here, but there are lots of reasons why someone assembling a Tele from parts would want to use genuine Fender parts.

As for the original poster's question - I'd suggest searching for Tele bodies on eBay. You'll quickly find the sellers like "Stratosphere" who sell brand new Fenders in pieces and they will have pictures of Fender Tele bodies. Compare the routing patterns, colors, and the stickers inside the body routs to see if any look like what you have. Generally speaking, most genuine Fender bodies are going to have a barcode and other stickers inside the body.

When I search for Tele bodies on eBay, I go to Musical Instruments / Guitar / Parts & Accessories / Parts / Bodies and then enter Tele*. That should bring up all ads with the words Tele and Telecaster.

Good luck.
