I was on www.guitarcenter.com a few days ago and saw that they sold 4 way pick-up selectors for Telecasters. It didnt say what the 4-way switch DOES, so if anyone knows, help me out.

thanks

It adds the option of having both pickups on in series as opposed to just the usual parallel.

I just purchased and installed one recently. I'm not an expert at wiring, etc, but it was easy enough for me to comprehend. It basically adds a fatter, more "humbucker-like" sound in a fourth position, and leaves the other three positions intact. It by no means sounds like a PAF pickup, it's a very unique sound, and an interesting option to add to a tele which is not normally known for that type of sound. I'd say the closest comparison I have to it would be the new fender Wide Range Humbuckers on their 72 Tele RIs, and even then it's not exactly like it.

I'd recommend it based on what type of music you're playing. Classic rock, blues, country, etc, you probably have no need for it. It's very much the opposite of the "twang" stereotype you get for telecasters. If you're into heavier music, progressive stuff or indie, it's an interesting thing to try out. Obviously the sound will depend on the type of pickups you have too.

Did these 4 way switches come standard on a 94-95 MIM Tele w/ an ashtray bridge? I found one locally that I was going to pick up for $200 but wasn't sure about the switch and the ashtray bridge. I thought that it might have been some sort of re-issue or something. Its black w/a white pickguard.

My girlfriend just gave me a FSR Western Tele for Valentine's Day! I'd been slobbering over it at the local music shop for a while...well, anyway it has a 4 way switch and the fourth position, as previously mentioned, gives kind of a fatter, slightly heavier tone.

Not sure if I'd mod a regular tele just to get the 4 way switch though.

Cheers,

Telecop

I bought a 95 MIM tele special, blonde, black pick-guard, humbucker at neck, 5-position switch. It has the 70's style, 6-saddle bridge. Nice guitar for $200. bought her last year. :)

Is there any way to wire a 4 way switch to give an out of phase setting like the 2nd & 4th settings of a strat ? don't want to lose the middle setting I've got but would like the out of phase sound as well .
thanks

The only guitar I can recall that came with a 4 way switch is the Merle Haggard Custom Shop model.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
