I have an old American made Tele. When I got it, the pickups were "upgraded". The sound was fine, but a little muddy. So recently, I opted for a set of Nocasters. They sound great, but now I have a very strange phenomenon. When I take my finger and rub in anywhere on the pickguard, I get the loud scratchy sound. Its almost like a rap DJ, but not quite that loud. I only changed the pickups and nothing else. The sound mostly comes when the neck pickup is engaged. I've regrounded everthing with a test wire. I've tried other pickguards. Strangely, it doesn't do it with a cheap single ply pickguard. But it does do it with three other 3 ply pickguards, one a genuine Fender. I've also checked all the connections. I don't get it. Any help?

Try putting a Bounce dryer sheet under the pickguard.

The bounce sheet really does work! I bought an am. std. Tele a couple of years ago, and changed the pickguard. I put on a three ply white pearl pickguard and the same thing happened. I thought it was the stock pickup, so I put in a Vintage Noisless in the neck position. No difference! I then checked all the wires, made sure everything was connected and grounded still no luck. Then someone told me about the "bounce sheet", and it worked.

I thought the same, "You're kidding", but it does in fact work.
I keep one of those sheets in my guitar case.
Or you can simply rub the pickguard every now and then with the sheet.

I can say with confidence, the dryer sheet does work, my MIM tele did the samething, a sheet of bounce under the pickguard, and bam - noise is gone. Oh, and your guitar smells good too. :)

Many thanks for the tip. It worked like a charm. Well, I had to use three Bounce sheets, but I finally licked the static. Now, I know something else to pass on!

Excellent!

To keep your guitar smelling fresh you may have to change the dryer sheets every month or so. LOL!

I just started experiencing the same static with my Eric Clapton strat that I bought this past summer. I'm in the northeast and with heat on in the house the air is super dry, and now I'm getting that annoying static sound after a couple minutes of playing whenever my fingers brush against the pickguard.

One question, when you guys say put the bounce sheet "under the pickguard" , does that mean to literally take off the pickguard and stuff the sheet under and then screw the pickguard back on? If that's the case, will I need to replace the sheets at any point?

Yes, take off the pickguard and stuff the dryer sheet under it and screw it back on.
If you want to keep your guitar smelling dryer fresh you will need to change the dryer sheet every month or so.
Or if the static comes back.

Hi all. I just bought a 52 RI hot rod with paf in the neck pu. I get a buzzing when I touch the mounting screws on my neck humbucker. Is this the same problem? I haven't checked any of the wiring but a dryer sheet sounds so much easier. Happy Holidays.

Veto

The problem is static that can not bleed to ground. Try a QTB modification. http://www.guitarnuts.com/index.php If you need any help with it ask the guys at GN2: http://guitarnuts2.proboards45.com/index.cgi
It takes a little work but it WILL stop the static. I can hold my quieted Tele right against a 4-tuble fluorescent light and can barely hear a buzz at all. Try it, you'll like it.
