Well fellas, I am in a bad way.... :( A bout 2 months ago I blew out my right shoulder and it has only gotten worse. I had an MRI done a week ago and low and behold a torn labrum. On Christmas eve I went to give my lab a bath and bang it popped again...now...it is so bad I can't even hold a pick to play my Tele...I got the blues.... :( What do you guys do when you are not able to play???

Jes' Eric, I'm so sorry to hear that bro. What I do when I can't play is I write, I try to put words to pieces I have written or I simply just write to get those same feelings I would be putting into my fingers into words.

Give it a go!

If not then get on youtube and listen to some Izzy, he has a way of cheering me up.

I hope you get better soon bro. Just rest as much as possible!

So sorry to hear about your injury. If it were not for a torn labrum that I had a few years ago I might not be playing guitar. I played bass for quite a few years- never used a pick to play. While recovering from my torn labrum my wife had an old acoustic that I found in the basement. Having so much time on my hands I started pickin that guitar and started learning to play the 6 string. It was so new and so much fun. The injury was to my left shoulder so I couldn't fret very well, mostly concentrated on learning to pick. As the shoulder got better I was able to fret better and start learning even more (chords to start!). What a challange. Eventually got a MIM standard ash for x-mas. I can't play standing strapped the 8-9 pounds on my shoulder makes it sore. Being a beginner I just happily sit in my chair. I will have an excuse to get a thinline when I get better. How much do they weigh in at? Anyway good luck with your injury, you will heal just try to be patient with it. Be glad its your picking shoulder (at least that is how it sounds), that way you should not have a problem strapping when youre better. In the meantime I would recommend trying to read as much fiction as you can thats what I used to do til I started playin guitar. Good luck. Any questions let me know I will be glad to help.

Gents,
Thanks so much for the encouragement and advice. I went for a long walk this evening with my wife and our dog and really enjoyed the crisp air. It made me feel a little better. It is just frustrating how even a simple thing like playing hurts!! But. it will heal and I will be back full force..:) You guys have lifted my spirits!!!!! Thanks :D

I hope so bro. Just be sure and relax it and don't be doing ANYTHING strenuous. You'll be back to your babies in no time.

I'm very sorry to hear about your shoulder!! I bought a strat off a guy earlier this year and he told me he took up the lap steel while recovering from shoulder surgery.

Either way I wish you a speedy recovery!!

Hey bro. Santa was great, nothing music related though but I got some really nice stuff.

Let me know how the DR goes.

My Brother,

That sucks...

I blew my right shoulder years ago and was patched up by one of the Army orthopedic surgeons at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital. (This was prior to my Tele playing days.) I have a variety of problems with my right arm and some nerve damage (numbness) in my fingers which keeps my Chickin' Pickin' and my Dick Dale surf riffs to a minimum, so I can literally feel your pain.

Like CC says- when it get hurting too much, take a few days off, pick up the pencil and do a little songwriting. I'm finding songwriting is good for my soul. It puts a little clarity into my life when I dig a little deeper into who I am. I also play the Alto Saxophone, so it get's some more play time when I can't play my Tele. The fingering is different enough I can get away with it.

Good news too, is that I seem to play a bit better if I lay off for a few days once in awhile.

I'm sure your doc's will get you fixed up. I always had a lot of confidence in both my military and civilian doc's in their ability to fix whatever I screwed up.

Work on your songwriting and maybe some studio work w/ editing and the like with some of the stuff you've already recorded. A combo of those two and some time off will probably be a good thing for you. Also, make sure Mrs. airbornestrat gives you lots of sympathy and attention!

You'll heal my Brother and then you'll Rock ON!

Ricky,
You are a true brother!!! I had therapy today...wohoo...LOL They drained the fluid from the shoulder and said that they are going the PT route to try and avoid surgery. I am happy about that. The Doc said I can play which made me a very happy man. I was in the studio enjoying the new beautiful KRK G2 Rokit 5 monitors that she got me for Christmas. They are fantastic. The only bad thing...is on the last 3 songs I recorded I hear just how much my playing sucked on the leads...LOL. My old monitors were really weak and I will be remixing a few really good songs and rerecording the leads on some of my new stuff. I do appreciate you and CC giving such great advice!!!!

Dude, that sucks. I blew out my shoulder last year and I had the same situation (maybe a tad less than you). I was on the guitar playin' injured reserve list for about 3 weeks. To pass the time I tried to explore some music that I hadn't really heard of. i like blues so i bought some iTunes of people i haven't heard of (some non- Clapton, SRV, B.B). Gave me some fresh ideas of stuff I wanted to learn when I was back. I went to some vinal record stores and looked for some classics, went to my local music store and looked at gear and talked shop with the owner and the other regular customers (Stay away from Guitar Center and Sam Ash for this ha ha). I read a book on Fender guitars, teles specifically. I tired to to do stuff that related to guitar so that when I could play I didn't feel like I was away for too long. And when I was able to get back in to it I could only go for about 30 min at a time. don't push it too hard.
