I am a new player but I like to check my tuning just about every time I pick up the guitar. I use a Korg pedal tuner to do my regular tunings.

I am finding that my Mexican Tele is going out of tune somewhat.

Is this common?
What can be done about it?

If your putting it in the case between playings that could be doing it, or else if the room is frequently changing in temperature that could effect the tuning.

yes I have noticed it going a little out of tune as a result of putting it in my gig bag but this is just at home on the stand that I notice it.

It is just somewhat out of tune - nothing extreme.
And it is kept in my living room so temps are constant.

Its actually a nonsense statement. It doesnt matter where your guitar was made. I've had cheapo chinese guitars that make a Mexican tele look like a PRS dragon stay in tune for months and months. Dragged em from gig to gig and kept em outside in the van on cold winter nights.

As Gratz said stretch your strings.
Keep it in a constant room temperature.
Check your tuner posts and the way the strings are wound onto them. Make sure theres only 2 or 3 winds onto the post and that the winds dont crisscross eachother. Try and make sure that the winds all sit ontop of each other going down the tuner post.

Oh when you change strings cut them about 40mm 1.75" past the tuner post they have to go on. That will give you about the right amount of turns on the tuner post.

I bought a Nashville tele about a month back and Mine went out of tune a bit for about the first outtings. I gigged it the following weekend and it stayed in tune until the last set. Only off a bit. After that weekend its stayed in tune. The strings need time to stretch. I gig mine so much that they stretched out fairly quickly. For the occasional player, it may take some time to finally stretch out the strings where they settle in. My Nashville tele plays like a dream now once the strings stretched out. I also worked out a deal where the store salesman included a hard case in for me. That helps especially in the colder weather and changing temps.

well it IS an MIM Tele . . .

Just kidding around, now for an attempt at a helpful response. Everyone else has given good advice so look into what they have suggested. I've also found that the fewer times your strings wrap around the tuner post, the better you stay in tune (don't get ridiculous and go for 1/2 a wrap or anything ) but through the notch then once around on top and once around under the string to lock it in place works very well. Locking tuners are even better if you want to go that route.

Lots of windings results in string movement.

I have an MIM Tele and despite what the nay sayers pontifficate MIMs can be great guitars,I know I have no complaints about mine.Another thing that can be causing your tuning problems is string binding where the strings get brought up in the nut, string Ts and on the bridge, this can be solved by using graphite or a "nutsauce"lube on all contact points.Binding can also be caused by the nut slots being too narrow for the strings you can remedy this by going to a lighter gauge string or having a"qualified"tech file your nut.
