I get the impression that the overall shape of a Tele "U" neck profile is similar to a Gibson "50s" neck profile. I know they won't be exactly the same and that no two necks are identical (at least in Gibson's case) so I'm just checking to see if I am in the ball park. I have to drive a ways to try one in person so I just want to make the drive worth.

Thank you.

The first broadcaster no truss rod necks were nothing like a gibson neck. The customshop are doing Notrod guitars for one dealer. The neck is based on those first broadcaster necks, thick enough not to need a trussrod. Apparently it affects tone. Personaly I find the Baja tele neck to be unnaturaly big. Its said to be a soft V but I feel no V shape to it. I'll put the contour measurer to it later and photo it.

Thank you Nikininja.

To be more specific, the neck I'm referring to is the one on the American Deluxe Tele.

Well modern sensibilities and guitars dont tend to make for any extreme measures do they? The main gripe with the standard is that people expect a highly individual guitar, much like a 50's or 60's guitar. When Fender have actualy made it to suit just about everyone in any situation. Albeit not to the point that a 56 strat is going to please a Buddy Holly impersonater or a standard tele suit a keith richards fanatic. But they are prime for the guy in a band covering many bases. The deluxe is pretty much the same but with added refinements. I'd expect a modern shaped neck with a slight outer rounding and depth from fingerboard to the apex of the rear. That kind of generic shape you get from all manufacturers, their all scared to take a risk on their well researched top sellers.

Still I'd say it only makes a passing nod to a 50's lespaul neck. All the dimensions are quite different maybe theres a similarity in the shape. I assure you though, break it down to numbers and there will be two very different sets of measurments.

Ok, so it's in the ball park which is close enough for me. Thank you.

I think its worth the trip to try out the guitar and make sure it feels right for you. I love my deluxe tele. took abit for me to get use to the u shape neck, where I always preferred c-shape necks. My deluxe is my main axe now.

I've got a U on my Fender AV52 and I like it. I've got a couple Gibson electics - a 60s, 60s slim and 50s rounded. As of the profile feel, my AV52 U is between the Gibby 60s and 50s rounded. I also have a Fender "Fat U" vintage that's like an inch thick from the fretboard surface to the the backside center of the neck - a real "baseball bat".

I agree with Dutchy, whenever possible, get your hands, eyes and ears on a guitar before you buy. Good luck.

I tried one of the G.E. Smith Artist Series Teles in a shop and it had an extra deep U-shaped neck profile. The Baja Tele has a beefy chunky neck too.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences.

I've got guitars with necks that range from super slim (Ibanez Wizards) to chunky (LP 50s profile and soft V Ovation Adamas) so I don't have a problem adapting to anything. I actually enjoy how different necks make me play a little differently. I also decided a long time ago that if I wanted to play certain guitars I would have to learn to be flexible with certain things like neck profile.

I found a really good deal on an '07 NOS American Deluxe Ash Tele (in the classic butterscotch finish) for $1199 so I just took the plunge. I'm sure the neck will be fine.
