I have a 2007 American Telecaster with a maple neck and have always noticed that the part of the neck that extends past the last fret isn't flush with the pickguard but is about an 1/8" above the pickguard. It appears that the neck is well seated in the neck pocket, and I've checked that the micro-tilt is disengaged. Is this gap normal?

1/8" seems excessive but it is normal to have a gap. Usually around 1/16".

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
