Guys,
I am in a fix. I have two Teles that I love! A HWY1 Tele and a MIM Standard. I love the sound from both...but..I really love the 3 saddle bridge on the HWY 1 better. I am not one to normally mod my guitars but...I am seriously considering changing out the 6 saddle bridge on the MIM, but I am not sure if it will make it sound any better. Has anyone here done that?

everyone has different preference on tone, I would say its up to what you like. It also depends on the saddles being brass, stainless or cast. I would try similar guitars of same type wood, finish and fretboard with the various saddles to help you get an idea of what it may sound like, and take it from there. I personally like the adjustment variation of a six saddle. much easier to set action, inotation, etc.,. let us know how you make out, best of luck.

I am a big moddifier of my guitars. And my two main teles have the tradtional style brass barrels. i am adding one to my set neck dual humbacker, and actually found one for a strat set up. WIth that said, i truely believe in the improvment of the tone, unfortantly most of the bridges are not compinsated correctly and the intonation of you intsurment is comprimised. I use Glendale bridges on my guitars, and glendale pots as well. check out www.glendaleguitars.com. his bridges will intonate correctly, and look pretty cool. he even builds ferrel for the body, dale is a great player, and has amazing tone, and he understtands what it takes to make your guitar sound like it is from the realms of tone heaven!! the bridges arent cheap but i highly recommend them to anyone that wants to improve the tone of you tele or strat

Add me to the 3 brass barrels brigade. It is very hard to get action and intonation right on them and the 6 saddle bridge is a lot better in every way shape and form. Except for tone and looks in my opinion (and thats all it is, my opinion).

I played a 63 the other week with 3 steel saddles. That was very nice, very airy tone. Almost strat like. And it had the absolute plus of no string slippage across the saddles.

Airborne I went the other way and changed a 3 saddle to a 6 saddle. I didn't notice a difference in sound, but I did miss the 3 saddle bridge and changed it back.

I am extremely sensitive to intonation issues, and this to me is the biggest drawback to 3-saddle bridges. My main gigging axe is a '94 Custom Shop Jerry Donahue Tele, and I put the Callaham compensated brass saddles on it.

Web site: http://www.callahamguitars.com/partstel.htm

They were about $40 shipped. I was able to just screw the saddles onto the pre-existing JD bridge plate - no mods required.

MAJOR difference in intonation, plays well all over the neck and resonates nicely. This should be the first thing you do when getting a 3-saddle Tele.

I went with Wilkinson adjustable compensated saddles from Stewmac.

I did a Tele project earlier this year and Ceri directed me to these. I only have one Tele, and I like the look and the tone. I did not experiment with anything else though. They are adjustable too so you can get the intonation right. The saddles pivot on the screw in the middle of each one.

Kong,
Thanks much!! One last question. Did you do this on a MIM Tele or an MIA? I just want to make sure I will not have to do any redrilling or hacking up my Tele. Thanks my friend!

Hoppy - my plans are to eventually con him into getting a Bigsby for one of his Tele's!

ABN - my understanding is that the screw holes on the various plates all line up the same, but I'd quiz Martian since he's probably the guy in the know. (Or the guys over on TDPRI)

I've never played any compensated saddles that were accurate. Even the seesaw design ones. Theres only one option for accurate intonation and it aint from earvana, feiten or callaham.
