Hi all, i recently bought a new MIM standard Telecaster, after i tried out a whole bunch of Teles before choosing mine. i noticed while trying some out, that some of the teles had tinted necks, and really nice smooth fret ends. The price was higher on all of the teles with the tint, and better fret finishes, so i asked the salesman why the price difference? He told me the higher priced Teles were the 2009 models, and showed me in the company sales flyer that they were advertised as being of improved quality over older models there, that i inspected, which did have rough, sharp fret ends. Naturally, i bought a 2009 model. Well, i haven't played that Tele for over a month, and when i played it today, i noticed that the fret ends had "grown" since i last felt them. It seems as though the neck has either finished curing, or maybe my leaving the guitar in a wall hanger all that time instead of in a case caused some kind of shrinkage. I'm wondering if this is a common issue, and if anyone else here has had this experience. Thanks!

It's the change of season - dryer air will do that. You could get a humidifier, have them filed, or wait 'til spring.

Has the guitar been setup properly?

If the neck relief is too excessive (truss rod) it could cause that as well.

It's called fret sprout.

If under warranty, I'd return it.

+1. Depending on where you live, and how cold it gets and how much the heater is on, it could affect this...

I'm very intruiged that you mentioned "wait til spring" here. Does that mean that the naturally more humid air will correct the neck back to it's original state?

Hanging them on the wall or near a vent is a bad idea especially in the winter.

Funny you should mention the wall hanging, as that's just what i did to her for a few months, and i have wondered from time to time about the possibility that if a guitars wheight is suspended from the neck that it could cause problems, I'm thinking sure enough at this point!

What happens is that the guitar is slightly cooler on the side closest to the wall than the side facing out. This is especially true if the guitar will hang on an outside wall. The different temperatures on each side can cause alot of problems. It is even worse for acoustic guitars.

I've been hanging guitars for well over 12 years now and never experienced side sprout.

I honestly think its more due to temperature/humidity changes than position. You shouldn't store your guitar anywhere prone to temperature change anyway. Whether its cased or not temperature changes will be detrimental to the guitar.

Actually, the assembly at the factory used new necks with the wood being a little damp "green" when first built and by the time they are shipped and arrive at the stores etc. the wood dries out a little and the frets stick out leaving you with a sharp edge. More then likely, they will always be there to feel sharp as the wood will never expand unless you expose it to a humid climate.

It's a fact that wood shrinks and causes finish checking and fret sprout. The greener the wood upon assembly, the more shrinkage. Of course sloppy construction also contributes to some problems.

Of all the guitars I've owned, the Korian and China made models are the worst for fret sprout. Of the 3 MIM's I've owned, only 1 had the problem.

All of which had to be worked over and now are perfect. Yes I removed the necks, filed, burnished and polished all the frets. Even done some slight rounding to the fret boards. Has been years ago since that has been done and all guitars are hanging on an outside wall about 5 feet away from the AC/Heat vent in my house and never had any sprouting problems since.

Accustics are a different creature however as the inside of the accustic is raw open grain wood being constantly exposed to the elements and more strict control is required!

thanks for the input, it really was weird to discover those fret ends feeling slighty rough at home some weeks after trying out quite a few MIM teles till i found this jem with a nice smooth neck comparable to the fret ends of my American strat.
