I am going to the guitar shop today and thinking about getting some vintage tuners for my Hwy 1. I can get a brand new set for $20 and want to take advantage of it. If I plan to change from the stock HWY1 tuners to vintage tuners (link below). If I make the change how much drilling is going to be needed and will there be holes exposed on the back of the headstock or can I just make the change without drilling. Can someone please outline the process for me? Also, would you suggest the Fender brand vintage tuners, Gotoh or another brand?

I know this has been asked and answered probably 20 times on here in the past but I searched for the answer but couldn't find it, so my apologies in advance for asking this repetitive question. Thanks in advance for help.

BCB,
Ok..this sucks to say...but everyone I have contacted and everything I can find gives me this answeer...depends on the make of tuners...etc etc. As for the back of the headstock mounting screws that is pretty much universal for the mounting holes...so that is good news. Sorry I am not more helpful...

my brother thanks for checking into that for me. My main concern isn't having to make adjustments for the new tuners but rather having the gawdy looking extra holes on the back of the headstock. I'm going to go ahead and get the Fender brand tuners just to stay as close to Fender "specs" as possible. The rest of the parts should all be in this week and I'll be taking her into the shop to get modded. Believe me man, I'll be sure to post pics! Thanks for looking into it for me my fellow Highwayman!

One last question, I'll need to buy Bushing and ferrules, any idea what type of thise I need to buy or where I could pick some up. I checked ebay but wasnt sure exactly what I needed. These are the tuners I am going with

right here my friend, I posted them earlier! Check out the Hamburglar on the neck and headstock! She plays sweet just needs some new strings and a little TLC! For $425 I think I did pretty good.

I'm pretty sure the Fender Vintage tuners you're looking at will be for a 9mm hole (sorry, don't know exactly what that is in inches) which is the size of the hole on the vintage headstocks. Your HW1 (I think) will have 10mm holes.

You can get Tone Pros Kluson vintage tuners at 10mm, but they will cost a lot more than the ones you're looking at. I think you can get bushes to convert the Fender ones to 10mm, but when I was doing this I couldn't actually find any. I bought the Tone Pro's anyway – for the same price they do chrome or nickel; I bought nickel.

Assuming you get the right size, when you remove the tuners from the HW1 you will have two little holes in the headstock that corresponding lugs on the tuners had slotted into. These will be covered when you fit the new tuners. You will obviously have to drill small holes for the screws that prevent the vintage tuners from twisting – these new holes will be visible if you convert back to standard tuners (for instance, to sell the guitar).

Hope that helps.

I got some bushings and ferrules along with the tuners, the guy who i bought them from included them with the tuners. He was saying with the bushings there would be no visible holes.

Thanks for all the information! I am planning to keep my Hwy 1 forever if possible. It's going to be with me for a long long time!

Funny thing for him to say, since the bushes and ferrules make no difference as to whether there are visible holes. Anyway, the most important thing is that you've got the right size bushes for the holes... hopefully!

what i meant was he was saying when we were talking about the bushings that there wouldnt be any visible holes to fill in. but the luthier who is doing the work told me there would be and he could fill them in, which to me just looks tacky but oh well.

I had to order some conversion bushings because the HWy 1 2009 has some type of special bushings.

I have all my parts now except for the vintage round string tree and the conversion bushings, the HWY 1 blonde is going to look KILLER with the 3 ply BWB pickguard!
