 I just installed a 4 way switch and put new pick-ups in and I have this terrible buzz. I checked the ground connections and everything appears to be wired up correctly. When I touch any metal part of the guitar the buzz diminishes quite a bit. I am guessing that this means I am creating a ground path from the guitar but I'm not sure. Any advice?

On the Fender Site you can find wiringdiagrams and partlist.
Click on support and look on.
Have you earthted the neck pickup cover ? there should be 3 wires coming
from the neckpickup.

Good luck,

Peter

Sounds like you have a grounding issue. Have you checked for cold solders?

1. You should have warmed up the area to soldier first and you need to check to see if you have any burr/s/dropings/wire lying in the cavities...did you clean it all out first?

2. You should/could have used a pre-soldiered twist for the 'loops' on the possitive end of the switch. You just wind/twist some wire and 'rope it'..hit it with some soldier to run through, then attach in the top 'u' of the points... This helps prevent over soldier and cold soldier problems...again, make sure you warm up the surfaces to be soldiered and clean them!!!

3. You should have taken off ALL the old soldier and wires from the pots.

4. Clean the pots where you ground after removal and sand, rub with alcohol /cotton swab and 'skim' warm up the pot-then 'skim' a thin drop of soldier and let set before you re-attach.

5. I used comerical wire that has better insulation values, especially for the ground. You may want to check if you have the capacators correct as well. I like using one on the volume seperate from the tone when possible, it opens the volume and helps 'clean' tone...

Hope this helps...but check you wireing first, then make darn sure you clean all the debree out...even on the pickups...make sure there's not trash/wire/solider on the back of them...it's electronics and CLEAN is important....

Lots of help here on how to solder. I have to agree on a grounding issue. I've had to disconnect and resolder everything again, in order to get it right. One thing that sometimes helps is what I call over grounding. I ground all the pots together. Don't just ground one and expect the plate to take care of the rest. Then run a ground wire to the bridge and another to the body. I run all grounds out from the pots. Sometimes its necessary to ground the neck pup cover. If the buzzing goes away when you touch the strings, its grounding. Good Luck.
