My appologies if this is in the wrong place. I'm simply hoping I can get more views/replies by posting this here. In all technicality there's a tele in this post

There is a fellow a province over from me who owns what I think is a really beautiful p-bass.

Here's his ad:
http://hamilton.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-musical-instruments-RARE-1978-FENDER-PRECISION-P-BASS-ELECTRIC-GUITAR-FENDER-JAZZ-W0QQAdIdZ154603571

Does this bass appear legitimate? Is the asking price reasonable, keeping in mind it's in CAD?

Anyway, I sent him an email offering him an AM Deluxe Tele + an MIM 50's pbass for it. Both are in very nice condition.

My instruments:

He emailed me back and seemed interested, asking me to give him a call.

In short:
-am I offering this guy too much for the bass? Or would this be a fair trade? OR would I be getting a deal, even?

I thought I'd consult the forum before I did anything. That bass just screams mojo, and being a 21-year old this'd be my first sort of vintage piece of equipment. I'm becoming a sucker for the older instruments, I guess.

Thank you all for looking, I really need some help here.

alright personally i don't like the look of the bass the guy is offering and you have 2 really nice guitars. i think this would not be a good trade at all.

p.s.
my opinion but if you think you want to do it ,do it

Seems like a lot to give up to me, but then again I couldn't ever imagine having enough guitars to be able to trade an Am Dlx as pretty as that one.

is that bass Antigua colored?

I think you're giving up too much, but
depends on how much you like the bass his is offering

I think it's alot to give up also. Both your guitars look sweet.

One question...why is this Bass so "rare"? I can't find anything that makes me think it is just a 78 P bass...nothing that was made in a limited run. Just my opinion I think you are giving away the farm for a horse. You have way more in your two guitars than there is in this bass but you have to do what makes you happy.

Dude - get ahold of brotherdave on the p-bass forum. He's the guy that can tell you the value of the bass. I know the antigua color is kinda rare, and people either love it or hate it.

It does seem like a lopsided trade, but brotherdave can set you straight. (Go to his website at the bottom of one of his posts and pm him if you need to. I absolutely wouldn't do anything w/o his inputs on the bass.)

It would be pretty hard for me to give up that beautiful Tele for a pea green P-bass, especially if you have a nice MIM P-bass already. (And I love my P-bass, so I don't have bias against a bass of any type, pea green or not.)

Just my not-so-humble, totally biased opinion....

Thank you everyone, you may have just saved me from making a dumb move.

The tele alone probably isn't worth his p-bass; would the guitar and a bit of cash seem like a fairer offer?

And I'd like to especially thank you Ricky, I'll try to get a hold of brotherdave and see what he thinks of the matter.

I really do want this bass

I've looked at the photos of the ANTIGUA 1978 Precision. It would be generous to say it is GOOD condition since I've not actually seen it in person or seen high resolution photos. The photos are not good. The headstock appears a little battered around the edges in the photo but it could be distortion.

The worst issue is the missing finish on the back. This is beyond a bit of buckle rash. This bass has been used extensively. The screws on the pickguard appear black in a few spots. I can't tell about the frets or truss rod. All of the parts I can see look correct. The stock thumb rest is missing but the holes for it are in the pickguard and you can see signs of corrosion on the pickguard from the thumbrest screws.

Antigua is one of the rarest custom colors. The color was first used on the Fender CORONADO series hollow body instruments. Legend says Antigua was developed solely to hide flaws in the binding routing on the edges of the Coronados. To make Antigua look like a legit color they had to offer it on other models and did in short order the next year. It was a custom color treatment and as such cost extra. Antigua is like rhubarb, anchovies and caviar. It is an acquired taste and it takes a while to grow on you. Some people hate it and others learn to love it.

My value estimates are based on the US Dollar and on my location which is in the central Carolinas of the southeastern USA and based on market conditions in NC, SC, GA, VA and FLA. Values might be higher in music center cities of the USA and other countries.

A 1978 Fender Precision Bass in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition, meaning original finish has several finish flaws present but otherwise neck is functional, frets are good with no unusual wear, all hardware and electronics are original, would be worth about $1300 to $1800 here. The scarcity of Antigua Precisions can add 300 to $500 to the value of the instrument. So figure $1600 for a low end actual value sale price and $2300 at the very most. It might appraise as high as $2800 to $3000 though. Appraisal value and actual value in a sale between two people are two completely different things. The absence of the original case can also hurt and you have to judge the condition of the original case too. So, I’m figuring ONLY the instrument since I can’t see the case.

The price he is asking for an outright sale is in the ballpark of actually being a fair asking price, but I’d negotiate him down from that if possible. You have to figure what the instruments you are offering in trade are worth to you, as I have no idea what the values for them are in Canada. It looks like you are trading for a bass worth about $1600 to $2300 where I live. I’m pretty sure it would bring at least $1600 if there are no hidden flaws like swapped out electronics. I’d also want the original thumbrest for $1600.

(A '78 Fender Precision in SUNBURST in VERY GOOD PLUS shape that is just short of excellent just sold for $2120 in Charlotte NC and that is actual value. The bass you are looking at has flaws the bass that just sold does not have.)

ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING TO CHECK on any Antigua finished instrument is the PICKGUARD. It should be 100% SOUND with no cracks at all. Replacement for them are impossible to find and if by some miracle you do manage to find one it will run you about $300 to $500.

Thanks so much Dave, you obviously possess an extensive amount of knowledge when it comes to p-basses! :o That post really answered alot of my questions; the bit about the pickguard was especially of interest.

One thing I've been wondering though, is whether this bass would have come with a bridge/pup cover. Can anyone elaborate on this?

Anyway, I've sent the fellow some questions now that I'm much better informed. I'm pretty sure I won't be offering both the tele and the 50's-pbass for it anymore, though.

Yes the pickup and bridge covers should be included as they were stock. They are probably with the finger rest in the case. If not, that would be a deduction.

I don't know enough weather the trade is fair or not , whatever you decide I hope you are content with your decision. If ANYTHING....I learned quite abit about the Antiqua finish as well as the 78 P-Bass.
Thanks again to Brother Dave.

Personally... I like the Antigua finish, I just think they ask too much for it.

Good luck with your decision :D

Seems like a fairly even trade if you just have to have the bass but personally I'd keep the fine tele and bass you already have. JMHO!

The final decision has to be yours my friend. If it is worthwhile to you then it's a good deal. I would not do it personally, not with the condition the finish is in on that Antigua bass (though I do think the antigua finishes are neat) . Just a bit too beat up for my taste.
