My buddy bought a new Telecaster yesterday and it has Lindy Fralin Blues Special pups in it, but the neck pup doesnt have a cover on it, the poles are just exposed. has anyone ever used these or a neck pickup with no cover? does he just buy a regular old cover for it if he wanted to cover it up. he said the guy he got it from said the sound was better on the pups without the cover. I just had never seen this before. Any thoughts? thanks!

Some pickups are made like that because the traditional cover tends to muddy the sound a bit (a bit too much for some), while some makers use different techniques to make them brighter while still having a cover, to keep the traditional look. You could try putting the cover back and checking if you like the tone the most with cover or not.

I see nothing wrong with not putting a pickup cover or pickguard on. I dont think the tonal diffence in pickup covers is a very audio diffence.

the pickups i was talking about were Lindy Fralin Blues Specials, the neck pickup I just found out doesnt come with a cover on it, supposedly it makes the sound better, but I had never seen that done purposefully before. thanks for the info.
