Hi all, I am on the verge of purchasing a beautiful American Standard Tele, but am also considering a honey blonde Highway 1. Unfortunately no local dealers have the Highway 1 in stock so I would be buying blind online. I love the look of the guitar, and all the reviews I've seen are great...and it's hard not to appreciate the $500 plus I'd be saving...but I'd really love some feedback from others to direct me to the proper choice. I am concerned not only with the quality and playability of the guitar but also it's value down the road a few years.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

Quality and playability should be good on either model. Setting intonation is a little easier with the 6 saddle bridge on the American Std. The American Std. will also have the more durable and shiny finish if that matters at all to you.

If value down the road is of importance then get the AmStd. Made in USA or not, when you go to resell the HWY 1 people will always remember it was a $700 MIA model, whereas the MIA Std by name alone will hold it's value better.

I think they both play nicely and are very close, I'd go with the HWY1 because I like the nitro finish and it's MIA and less than $1000. Can't go wrong with either.

Decisions, desicions..I have a Highway 1 and love it. Jumbo frets are a little different than that on the Standard, great for string bending and barre chords. I'd try them both..but I don't feel you would go wrong with the Hwy 1. The intonation is a bit tricky with the 3 saddle bridge but can be done and has more of a vintage look. My choice was that I liked the over$500 plus dollars I saved as well. No case but mine has only even been in the gig bag a couple of times. I polished the nitro finish with some GHS guitar gloss and have it decently shiny. It looks as good as it sounds.

I have a 2009 HWY1 Tele which I absolutely love. From the Jumbo frets to the Grease bucket tone to the nitro finish. This guitar screams classic Tele tones. I also really love the 3 saddle bridge....IMO you can't go wrong with this guitar...that said IMO try the other guitars available to play before you make a choice. I do think that you will find the HWY 1 I an exceptional guitar and the price tag is nice..:) Here is a shot of mine..

I went the Hwy 1 route for my Tele (the price was just too good to pass up) and it's a great guitar. As far as "value down the line" goes, it's an American made guitar so it will hold it's value.

I'd go HW1 because it has attitude, whereas I find the Standard kind of soul-less. Don't worry about value down the line... the real value is enjoying it!

Okay, I gotta ask . . . why soulless? Anything specific?

Well, it's all subjective and by the nature of the question I guess you've already disagreed with me, but it has no particular foibles. I'm sure it does everything very well, but to me it's kind of 'perfectly neutral' – which is why I think it has little character... or mojo.

I had an 05 hywy 1 tele that I traded for my american ash deluxe tele, which is my main axe now. As much as I love my deluxe, I really miss my hywy 1, which also had great tone and attitude. If it feels and sounds good to you, buy it, they are great guitars.

I own a Hwy 1 Tele and like it alot so I'm not "invested" in the Am Standards. I was just curious about the "soulless" aspect. Is it the pickups? The finishes? Because whichever you choose, Am Std or Hwy 1, the basics of the Telecaster are the same on both guitars.
The Hwy has an old school bridge and tuners (at least my'04 does) where the AM Std had the modern accoutrements but that's basically it.

Actually, I have to confess, compared to the one I had, the 2010 Standard LOOKS a bit more vintage – satin finish (slightly) tinted neck and old-skool saddles, but the HW1 has the Grease Bucket thingy, which just seems to me to engender it with a bit of attitude. At the end of the day they're all good.

Groovy now I get what you're talking about. I do dig the greasebucket tone circuit and I agree with you that Tele's do look best when they are a little primitive.
