Oh, and while I'm thinking about my own darned '69 Thinline Reissue, here's a quick pic of it. The store I bought it from had a black and a natural or aged natural (can't quite figure out which one it is) in stock and I bought the natural.

Image
It sounds more like a traditional Tele than the '72 Reissue and it's even lighter. I think I have a new favorite Telecaster. :)

I would get the natural also if I had a choice! Sweet telecaster!

Thanks for the links, says 2002-2003 MIM. This is going to be a tough call but I am giving the guy a ring later today to discuss it. Said we can do the shippings via delivery confirmation s they can be safely tracked.
Anyone else have thoughts on this trade?

My opinion on this deal -

The one you posted a picture of is a black MIM '69 RI. '69 RIs do not say "Thinline" on the headstock.

Link to this model, which is still in production and has been for several years: http://www.fender.com/products/search.p ... 0136902300

Don't make this trade. Avoid the risk. Sell your acoustic if that's what you want to do and then go shopping for a Telecaster locally. Buy a natural one if that's what you prefer. There are tons of '69 RI Thinlines out there, new and used.

Good luck.

George, thanks for the feedback, so you say don't make the trade is that primarily because of the risk involved or because you think the two guitars aren't of the same value? Elaborate a little bit more for me. As I said before my main two concerns are the risk and losing my only acoustic. I have my acoustic on ebay and craigslist for sell right now but I doubt anyone will bid because everyone on there is looking for a deal and not wanting to pay what the guitar is worth. 8 people watching it though so who knows.

Well, keep in mind I’m just some guy on the internet. The choice is yours and I probably shouldn’t get involved but I figured since you were asking for opinions, I’d give mine.

I don’t know what your acoustic guitar is worth, so my advice is given without money in mind. I was only thinking of the risk involved and then when you wrote “I would get the natural also if I had a choice!”, I thought “wait a minute, he does have a choice”.

I know that thousands of guitars are bought and sold on eBay and I’d bet the vast majority of people are happy with their deals. But you’re both shipping guitars and there’s risk of one or both of the guitars being damaged in transit. You don’t know the other guy. Maybe he’s less than honest. Why risk a long-distance trade with a stranger before your eBay auction ends? (more on that later)

And, you haven’t seen his guitar in person or played it to see if it’s “the one” for you. You mentioned you’d rather have the natural finish. If you live near a large city, I’d think you’ll have no problem selling your guitar locally even if it takes some time on craigslist and then trying several new or used ’69 Thinlines to find the one you like best, rather than settling for the first one that some guy on the internet offers.

You said, “He did mention that some master luthier from his area set it up and "dressed the frets down smooth and fast...”. Now that could be a good thing – a good setup by a professional guitar tech will make any guitar play better, but what if it wasn’t a good job? Sure, I’m trying to think of reasons not to do the trade, I admit that, but look at the pictures you posted. The three saddles are all almost in a straight line, so it’s doubtful intonation is set correctly on that Tele. That’s easily fixed but wouldn’t a “master luthier” have gotten the intonation correct? My point is why take a chance with this guitar when you could (I assume) find one locally you’d know was right before you bought it?

Lots of action happens in the last few seconds of an eBay auction - you might be surprised. If I were you, I’d do two things while you wait for the auction to end:

1. Tell the guy with the black thinline you’ll discuss a possible trade if your acoustic doesn’t sell on eBay. You can always do a deal with him after your auction ends - you can do a private auction with him through eBay and Paypal for the protection that offers or avoid fees and do the deal privately.

2. In the mean time, go shopping locally for ‘69 Thinlines. Check all your local Fender dealers, guitar stores that sell used gear, craigslist, etc. See what’s available and what current prices are in your area. Play a bunch of them and see if you like them in general and any one of them in particular.

Good luck!

George you make a lot of good points and thanks for the feedback, it is much appreciated.

The acoustic goes for 785-999 new depending where you buy it from online. I got a good deal and got it for 699.

I definitely would get the natural one, and I've never ben a fan of black guitars but liked the look of this one, just not as much as the natural. I've played the natural one at a guitar center many times and loved it.

And truthfully I want to sell the acoustic I have in order to get a Guild Dv-8 acoustic. I didn't know as much about Guilds before I bought the Blueridge, although the BR is a great instrument. He is the one who brought up the trade because he wants a Blueridge like mine and has been wanting to sell his Thinline to fund purchase of a acoustic, and well I am a Tele fanatic.

Where I live there really are 3 guitar stores and they are all really shameful to be honest. One has ben in business 100 years so they aren't about to make any deals/kinda snobbish, one is the local shop and they have some deals but nothing like a GuitarCenter. I'm not a huge fan of GuitarCenter either, but with them you can play the guitar before you buy it and can get a new one not a display model fairly easy.

George, thanks for all the feedback, I'm going to hold off and see how the auction goes before making any decisions. If the auction goes well I will make anywhere from 500 (starting price) to 625 (buy it now) for my acoustic and that would put me only 100-200 short of the Guild I want.

Thanks again, to you and EVERYONE else who has chimed in on this topic, much appreciated.
