So here's the deal. I am selling my acoustic here locally and ebay. A guy contacted me asking for more details about it and wanting to buy it from me. He then mentioned he had a Thinline Telecaster, and I have been looking for one of those. I'd take $625 for my Blueridge BR-160 since it is like new and comes with a case and sells for $785 up to $899 in most places online. Here are the pics of the Thinline. If anyone can give me their thoughts on it or any info on what model it looks like. I'm waiting for him to send me the serial number and more infor, but he said he is an acoustic player and wanted to trade me his Thinline w/ hard case and $100 for my acoustic. About how much would you say the Thineline is worth? Good trade? Also, do all thinlines say Thinline on the headstock?

My brother DO THE DEAL!!!! That is one mighty fine guitar. Yes in every picture I have seen it says Thinline. Until you get a new acoustic you can always do the acoustic simulator pedals..:) I think that pricewise you are getting the better end of the deal...JMO

So my concern is this one he sent me pics of doesnt say thinline.

also, there is the issue of shipping. Id have to ship him my guitar, and he would ship me his plus $100 via paypal. If i get his guitar and it is busted or not 100% then I'm ferked.

That looks like the '69 reissue. I think the '72 reissue has double humbuckers.

I was at Guitar Center a couple of days ago, and I think they were priced around $750 or so. American Musical Supply has them for $799 delivered.

Not sure about the headstock.

Only you can decide what it's worth to you on a trade. Just make sure to keep yourself protected so you don't get the short end of the deal.

CC I think has a Thinline along w/ a few others and they seem to like them pretty well.

Hell - it's a Fender Tele. You can't miss!

I found the email and he says

"MIM in 2004 same as a 72 reissue"

My main concern is how to keep myself protected, since it is a trade and I haven't met the guy. I could have him ship it to me first since he is the one proposing the trade. I know everything checks out with my acoustic other than the typical pickguard wear from playing it over a 2 month period.

$899 retail at gcenter. Headstock looks correct.

Bro - don't waste your time emailing, get his phone number and talk to him on the phone. Ask him about the guitar from top to bottom. Get a feel for what kind of guy he is. Let him know your concerns. Sure, he may pull the wool over your eyes, but he may be the most honest guy on the planet.

Plus, check PayPal rules. You may be protected for at least your $100 if the deal isn't as described.

Sometimes you just gotta go with your gut on deals like this. That's why I say talk to the guy. That should help you to decide.

dbr,
Aks him for the serial # this way you can search it. The headstocks I saw were for 72 reissues...I am still looking to see all Thinlines for you.

Good call, and I figure he can tell me whatever he wants but he is the one who wants the trade so I have the upper hand at least in negotiating. And well, it is a sweet Thinline! I'm just always hesitant to buy off ebay or make trade on there, I haven't been burned yet on ebay, actually I have always done pretty good, just want to make sure all is kosher.

I'm GASinnnn really bad for a Thinline as it is, but I am going to make sure to talk to him and get all the details. This is going to be a tough decision because I got the Blueridge for $699. :D The whole "trade" thing just concerns me because I know my guitar and end of the deal is legit.

HE did mention that some master luthier from his area set it up and "dressed the frets down smooth and fast"...anything to be concerned about with that?

To me it is a presonal thing ...I happen to love the nice big jumbo frets on my HWY 1..some folks like them dressed a little more than what you get from Fender. Those Thinlines are really nice guitars!!!! To me it sounds like a nice deal. As stated definetely talk with him and get the serial number to cover yourself.

Here's my thoughts if it checks out OK when you talk to him. In reality (not what you wish), both guitars are worth about $450-550 used. Plus you get an extra $100, so if both guitars are of equal wear and tear, you'll have the better end of the deal. If the Tele is a bit worn, you still have $100 in your pocket.

I'm not too worried about buying a guitar off fleaBay. I've bought 2 and both were fine, but I talked to the guys first. If he's got good feedback and seems like a good bloke, you should more than likely be OK.

If you get it and it ain't what you want and can't get it back to him, use it for trade bait for another one. If you're out a hundred or two.. well.. sheist happens.

I'll bet you'll be OK though. Just don't let a GAS attack overrule a gut feeling...

Good points, I plan to talk to him tomorrow about it on the phone. I'll be without an acoustic which is my main concern, but that'll leave me with my Hwy 1 and a Thinline 69 reissue, so i'd have that going for me! Any other questions you think I should ask him specifically? I'm still a newbie for the most part.

I'm gonna play a little before bed time, I'll check with you guys in the Am, thanks

That's a 1969 Thinline Reissue. It's MIM and has two vintage single coil pickups. The 1972 Thinline Reissue has two humbuckers. I own both and love both. They're very nice guitars.

Oh, and my '72 has Thinline on the headstock, the '69 does not.
