Hi all, I bought a Tele on ebay which is supposedly a 2002 standard made in Japan. I checked the serials and it has Q+6 digits which is apparently a 93-94 Japanese Tele. 2002 Japanese Tele's are supposed to had Q+5 digits.
Other things I was a bit unsure about were:
-Neck plate was blank.
-The guitar looks vitually brand new
-Serial number and decal look slighly raised
-Parchment style scratchplate and neck pickup still have plastic on them.

Is this sounding like a fake to you?

Thanks,

Scotti

Is the neckplate supposed to have anything written on it? As far as I know, not.

A guitar a few years old and with the plastic still on the pickguard... I wouldn't say this is all that impossible to happen... but a little strange yeah..maybe the pickguard only was changed? I think those should have stark white pickguards, not parchment, but I'm not sure.

Does the logo decal seem to be applied over the finish?

Waiting for the pics!

Pics are on this add and yes the decal does look a bit raised but it is not a gloss finish on the neck/head so maybe thats normal?!

Hi Scotti,

As you know, I have answered this on another forum.

For the benefit of the Fender Forumites, Scotti's guitar is a genuine CIJ Tele. It is the "standard" model CIJ, which means that it is the Japanese equivalent of an MIM Tele in comparison with a MIA tele.

It features a different bridge and headstock decal to the upscale CIJ Teles.

I totally agree. This guitar is a top loader, Japanese guitar. If it is Crafted in Japan it is a 2002-2004 and if it is a Made in Japan it is a 1993-1994. I have seen more of these in the Made in Japan, 93-94, vintage than the later. Seems like the top loaders usually so not sell for as much as the strings-through-back models.
