i understand what you are trying to say to me "kid". lol! sorry that was just funny to me because i am not a kid. anyway maybe i should put it this way. the gothic/shock rock stuff just isnt my scene. i have a hard time wanting to listen to any of his stuff because his look is so distracting to me. it detracts from the music "for me". i know its suppose to be all about the music but thats just the way i feel about it. i have no doubt that he is excellent.

I just don't get it man. Thats his look but he plays country and chickenpicks as well. Like I said he has played for Lynyrd Skynyrd too.

Music is about the ears bro, not the eyes.

I don't see why that would put you off. For the most part Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Axl Rose looked ridiculous but it's their music that matters.

Keith Richards and Jethro Tull have the same look but sound completely different.

David Gilmour and Eric Clapton look like geography teachers at an English Comprehensive. I would listen to them for days on end.

Susan Boyle looks like a hairy potato with learning difficulties but her voice is outstanding.

Its not about the packagin man, its the product. The guy can look however he wants to look.

the difference between john 5 and all the artists that you listed is that john 5 dresses and does his make-up because he intends for people to look at him. otherwise why would he do it? everyone else you listed might be ugly and dress poorly but in most cases they dont do it with intention that you look at them because of the way they look. when john 5 dresses up and does his make up it is with the intention that people look at him.

I think its more to do with representing himself as an individual than getting people to look at him. He's all about the Tele's and has been since he was a youngster. Its all about people hearing him. Its a means to an end.

I dress very different and its got $@!& all to do with people looking at me. Its about me feeling comfortable as and with myself as an individual.

we can agree on that. it definetly sets him apart. you have stated that he is a multi genre musician, i think that he would help himself out by loosing the make up. i think his image pigeon holes him into the shock rock genre eventhough his talent obviously goes way beyond that. thats just my opinion.

Mick Jagger's look pigeon holes him as a camp grandfather, not a stadium filling rock god.

I think you just need to open your mind a bit bro and I mean that in the nicest way.

Musics about the sounds and nothing else, he doesn't need to get rid of his look and obviously hasn't been pigeon holed considering who he's played with resulting in no less than 4 Fender signature guitars.

Have a good day and don't judge a book by its cover.

I think you'll find lots of artists dress differently, its just them expressing themselves, and generally they do get looked upon because of the way they dress but john 5 is no different to the guys in motley crue, papa roach, lady gaga, steve vai, jay-z, the list could go on forever. Black stone cherry look like a group of hicks but their music is awsome! enough said i think 8)

If you listened to him in a dark room, eyes closed....would his looks matter....? If so you are missing out.
I don't feel bad   . It's your loss, it's one less cat in my way, in line to see him live. I'm not the best looking guy.. ....So go and let looks stand in the way of your appreciation of an artist.
Whatever your response is... ...don't care.....I'm out. 8) 8) 8)
Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!! :D :D :D :D :D :D

To be honest i couldn't care if he dressed like a nun and got on like a diva on cocaine. He is one massively talented guitar player. How this thread turned into this i will never know. To me it shows he's probably a bit insecure in how he looks without. Maybe when he was younger he did. This was a way he could feel comfortable and confident in himself. Is that what it's not all about? Is it not easier to play when ya not worryin or, excuse the pun, fretting about your self-image. I dress like i wanna dress. F@!? Everyone else in my eyes. Cuz it really doesn't matter when it comes to music. Just my 2¢ as they say

Met him at a Loser concert and he seemed to be a regular guy. Seems to honestly enjoy teaching what he knows. The dark image to me seems an act "necessary" for some of the bands he works for.

I think he's great in most everything except his days with Marilyn Manson.
I was really suprised at his chinkin pickin ability. Didnt expect it out of him.
