hey,

Im modding my MIM tele to make it look more vintage, during which i plan to stick some fender vintage machine heads on it, as seen on the road worn series. Was just wondering if anyone knows how easily they will go on? is it a straight to straight swap, or will i have to drill extra holes? in which case will the old ones be visible?

If this is the case, does anyone know of any other good vintage ones?

thanks

For Ping or Gotoh "Kluson-style" you will need a certain size of bushings, so not a direct fit. I "think" you don't need re-drilling, but I hope someone else can confirm this for us :) .

A Standard Telecaster (MIM) has pegholes of approx. 9.85mm.
Vintage pegholes are approx 8.6mm, so you need reducer bushings to fit correctly.

I don't know if the pegholes will need reaming out a touch - it would depend on the tolerance of the bushings. If they are too tight and you force them in you risk splitting the wood.

A follow up:
I have just installed a set of Wilkinson Deluxe Vintage Tuners on my Squier Standard. The peghead holes on Std Squiers are 10.5 mm (measured 10.4 with my callipers). I ordered the tuners with 10.5mm conversion bushings from Axesrus ( www.axesrus.com ). They were a perfect fit - pushed in with a bit of pressure (all bar one which was a smidgeon loose - a bit of wood glue sorted that out no problem).
With that in mind I would say the same ease of fitting would be achieved on a MIM with the 10mm bushings, and I'm going to be ordering another set for my MIM necked partscaster.
The only place in the UK I've found so far with the 10mm bushings is Allparts

ah cool, i would love to know how it goes with the mim neck!

also how have you found the wilkinson tuners? i was also considering trying them out? do you find they hold their tune etc? also have you gone for the split peg, or the hole? If the split peg how difficult are they to tune? i kinda prefer the look of them, but have heard their more difficult to use?

I went with the split post, bog standard vintage style. I prefer this to modern tuners with the holes, and find them much easier to restring I have Wilkinson e-z-lok vintage tuners on a 50s Classic neck and don't like the 2 hole method - I used the lower hole and they held tune pretty well, but the split post is just so simple to use.
Over the last few days I've had them on they seem to keep tune very well indeed - I strung them up with an old set of strings, too. I believe the Wilkinsons are 15:1 ratio, so pretty accurate tuning. I can't compare them to Klusons as I've never had them, but the vintage tuners on my 1995 MIJ 52 are sloppy in comparison.

I haven't got round to it yet - debating whether to go with another set of Wilkinsons or try Gotohs. Apparently there are 2 sizes of reducer bushings with different internal diameters for the shafts, so I have to order the tuners first to make sure I order the correct bushings.
