You bring up a good point Caleb....

A lot of the reason why I mod is because I cannot afford Custom guitars and I don't have my own signature model. I just find it entertaining the people who say they never ever mod cause it means they bought the wrong guitar...I'm wondering if they've ever added salt or pepper to their food, because that is modding the food to their personal tastes, which is what I do to my guitars, mod them to my personal tastes. But I guess some see adding salt or pepper to food as a mod, and if they have to mod their food, then it means they didn't buy the right food to begin with....

Very interesting point of view..:) I like your reasoning. Like I said for me...maybe I have just been lucky with my Teles..:)..now my Fender P bass...different story..I put in Silver Lace Sensor pickups, BadAss II bridge etc etc etc..:) But my Teles were IMO perfect for my all illusive tone. Now that I have them and my tone I am happy as a clam. I do like to see what folks think and do...it makes life so much more enjoyable than just seeing things from my point of view!!

Mod away I say. Just keep the original parts in a zip top and keep them in the case or in a safe place.

Why modify the best sounding guitar?

Another option to consider is the rest of your rig as well. Back when electric guitars & amps were first being produced by Fender, they were sold as sets, and therefore tuned to each other. I can tell you from personal experience that not all guitars sound good with every amp.
I have nice custom shop strat that sounds like butter with a Hot ROd Deluxe, but sounds like $@! through my marshall. Likewise, my Les Pual sounds awesome through the marshall, and it sounds lame with the Hot Rod Deluxe. Ironically, they both sound pretty good with my Mesa Boogie.

Nice post. I like what it implies because I have been saying this forever. People will spend money on pickups, pedals, more pickups, funky straps, still more pickups, more pedals, unique pick guards, yet another set of pickups and STILL fail to consider their amp as part of the tone equation. A high quality pro grade amp will make even poor pickups sound not too bad but a crappy amp can't make even the best pups in the world sound good. The amp is the last link in the chain. It's the part that actually get to your ears. Think about that. Why people always seem to cheap out on this important step is beyond me. If they're squeamish about spending money they should take up a different hobby because this life ain't for the poor or the cheapskates.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

It also depends on what "tone" you are goin after as well. Keep in mind that any recording that you are trying to emulate owes more to "capturing the magic" than the gear actually used, not to mention studio tricks (compression, EQ and multiple tracks come to mind).

It is funny..but I never tried to get someone else's tone. I always wanted to have my own tone. There are guys out there who are my Tele heros and have a phenomenal tone..but I don't want to be the guy everyone says he sounds just like so and so...I want them to say...he has his own tone..:) That is why I have been selective an well taken years to find the right combination of gear!

MOD MOD MOD I say.

I want my guitars personal to me. I havent got one guitar that hasnt got something extra under the hood.

My mexican partsocaster is clapton boosted with a dimarzio fs2 in the bridge (you should hear that pickup with the midboost on full) a tone control instead of tbx. Locking staggered height tuners, wilkinson bridge. Self designed compensated bone nut (1 piece shelf design).
My 57 hotrod is blender pot wired to allow neck and bridge or all 3 pickups.
My custom classic has s1 switching
My Vintage lp has a reverse magnet out of phase neck pickup.
My baja tele has 2 wilkinson compensated saddles the E/A saddle is stock. Its own one piece compensated nut. I put a .47uf cap on the tone pot to allow a little more bass to come through too. I also set the neck flat and put the relief in the frets after believing a dan erlewine statement. I put the neck back to how it should be afterwards. Also I Thinned out the finish on the front of the guitar to allow more grain to show through.

Heres the one piece compensated nuts. The tele one is a different shape to the strat one cos its designed to work with compensated saddles giving damn near perfect intonation on a 3 saddle bridge tele.

Who says modding isnt good. Things can always improve and somebody else may not have though of it.

No mod's..... Gives you an excuse to go buy another guitar!!! However if you do mod one, it still gives you an excuse because it still doesn't sound right. Go buy another guitar!!

See where this is going??

Personally, for me no mods..

If I was to spend money on a high-end guitar, it better be the way I like it - no mods. I would also probably shy away from modding brand new guitars.

If I want to mod, I like to hit the used market. Craigslist finds are definitely made to be modded! Besides, it's fun to mod.

My black strat was a 2001 MIM Standard which I got for $225 with the case. Put EMG SA's and a Callaham trem block to replace the skinny stock block. The guitar feels great, plays great, sounds great, was fun to mod, and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Assuming the hard case I got was worth $75, I paid $150 for the guitar, $208 for pickups, $60 for trem block, $20 for new pick-guard = killer guitar for $438! I think it blows away a new MIM standard for less money.

Mod? Jim Campilongo put in tuners on his guitar and different pickups. With that said, if people don't want to mod, fine.

Like all these unnecessary points of contention, there's some "point" beneath it all that someone is trying to make like a statement about themselves...

I mod. I don't mod.

I use 9's. I play with 11's.

I will only play an ash guitar...me only an alder...

I put my pickups as close as I can...I like em lower...

In the end, nothing is proven.

I will say this though" the obsession with modding can often substitute for focusing on playing...

and the big BTW is this: if the guitar sounds like crap unplugged or is an acoustic dud, there is NOTHING you can do to dramatically change the sound of it unless the original pups are crap on the verge of defective.

Different does not equal better....just different!!!

I always mod, at the very least I upgrade the pickups (usually to something with higher output than the stock Fender units).

Then locking tuners for easier string changes.
Fancy pickguards because they look good.
I once added a Bigsby to one of my Tele's because it looked cool. I almost never used it and it made changing strings a bit of a pain.

I don't leave my guitars stock, each of them is a "Custom Shop" piece (it's just my Custom Shop instead of Fenders :D )

I mod almost all my axes, but only with mods are reversible (and I keep the original parts in case I have to sell...but I wouldn't do anything to a vintage, valuable guitar.

...I do have an 1980 G&L F-100 (Series II neck profile) that is dead stock--I just don't have the heart to mod it...it sounds too good, and it's a rare bird on top of that.
