Ok Guys..here is the question..you go out and get a Tele. You love Teles...do you keep it as is or do you mod it and why?

Me I am a traditionalist...keep it stock. Leo knew what he was doing so I won't mess with his formula... :D JMO

Well I seem to mess with everything but usually don't recoupe my time or money if I sell.

I read somewhere that you should only buy a guitar if you love it the way it is or keep looking until you find one you love.

That really makes sense to me, but I don't do it!

I am fortunate in that I have found 2 Teles like that..:) so that is why I won't mod them!!! They are perfect for me.

Only time I wouldn't mod is if it is a model or make that is rare, vintage or expected to increase in value.

Depends on the guitar. Some I have stock, some for various reasons, have been modded...Some of mine sound fine stock, others need some modding either because what was stock was not correct or needed improvement.

If it was me I wouldn't mod,to mod a guitar means you're not satisfied with it so why buy a guitar you're not satisfied with in the first place?I think if someone wants to mod a guitar they should start off with a playable POS and mod away.

I say that its fine to make any mods you like. This is especially true if you have more than one. One of my Strats has been modded and it morphs into something else at least once a year by pickup change, block & saddles etc. My others will remain stock.

Well my Brother - I'm not sure where some of my Tele's fit into your discussion, since they are factory mods, but since they aren't "pure original" Tele's, I'm guessing they are "step-children". :)

I have six Tele's. Three are bone stock (well - I guess only two, since when I found the burgundy one in a pawn shop, somebody had installed a Seymour-Duncan in the bridge.)

One is a 60's re-issue w/ a Bigsby (from Fender), and the other two are Nashville Tele's (3 pups); one of which further is a Nashville Power Tele, w/ the "accoustic" bridge pups.

So - different Tele's for different sounds and even for what mood I'm in.

Right now I'm TDY to Idaho for two weeks doing some school, and I brought one Tele with - a stock MIM - so I guess that says something in itself. Actually, she's a road hardened vet, so if she gets dinged bouncing around in the truck, I won't feel bad like if I dinged one of my babies.

To further muddy up the mix, I found a used American Tele w/ a B bender (factory) in a guitar store on my way up here, and if'n it's still there on my way back to Oklahoma, I'm gonna grab her! I think B benders and Tele's fit hand in glove.

Now - if I could only own one Tele? It'd be a stock '52 re-issue... But, since I am a raging mad Teleholic..., I'll have this one, and this one, and this one...

So - do I "mod" my Tele's? Well - I let the boys at Fender do it for me. :D

It all depends on how happy you are. You seem to love yours bro. Think it just comes with satisfaction, you either get it immediately or you stay on the hunt.

I think thats a bit extreme...To me mods are about trying to make a good thing better...Its like if someone buys a house, then later decides to make an addition on the house, its possibly not that they weren't satisfied, it may be that they are so satisfied that that want to make it even better than what it was...You find a good thing, and sometimes you want to make it better...at least thats how I see it.

It's been said many times on many boards that you should not mod a guitar expected to increase in value. If that's the case don't mod any MIA guitars and restrict your mods to MIK and MIM models. Given enough time any MIA guitar will begin to increase in value. I cannot imagine a world where many years from now eBay bidding will see huge increases in value for the Korean or Mexican Fenders of today.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Someth8ing to bear in mind - most artist signature guitars are so because the artist modified them in some way to givve a unique sound or look (Andy Summers springs to mind).

I have three teles - two stock ex custom shop, one that I have put different pickups, and a Strat neck.

All sound different, and are used for different reasons sound wise.

Just my three cents worth.
