I personally care nothing about a reliced Tele or Strat that is rusty brand new (no offense to those that do). I mean when a man gets a 57 Chevy and fixes it up it usually looks nicer than a brand new model. But with Telecaster and other guitars new copies are made to look 50 years old owed by some guy that didn't have a case for or ever took care of or polished his axe. Whats up with this. :?:

And to put it into perspective, some people also like building rat rods that look beat up but still function perfect....

Its all about image.

+1...the same could be said about me...I love my guitars in pristine condition with no mods to them...but that is me..the only mod I want to do to my HWY 1 Tele is get the ashtray cover for the bridge...and all that involves is snapping it on and off...

Have purchased a few copies of Hot Rod Deluxe just out of curiosity. Have never understood the rat-rod either. They look like crap to me. Old cars that look old and uncared for on purpose. Restore it or forget it I say. Rust isn't cool just because it's rust.

Also I much prefer the '55 to the '57 if you're talking shoe boxes.

My 2¢.

Perhaps the American auto industry wouldn't be in the situation they're in if they came out with relic and roadworn cars....How about a Relic'd '57 Chevy in 2008...I'm sure this would have sold more than whatever Chevy was already selling at the time....

bowlfreshner, FYI, that's a 55 post, not a 57.

Either way, the point I am saying is, why not road worn cars along with road worn guitars... 8)

I think we are in agreement and saying the same things but possibly for fundamentally different reasons. I have the same dislike for beat up cars as I have for beat up guitars whereas other people (and maybe you as well?) love beat up cars and beat up guitars alike.

BTW, could you please resize that pic? Thanks.

I'm not really a relic fan either, but I do understand whty some people love them. It is partly the worn in feel, which is quite different from a new non relic guitar. You also dont have to worry about putting a scratch or ding in it. And last but not least there is the mojo factor. Alot of people see the wear and tear as a badge of honor for a guitar that is been battered and beaten in every dive from coast to coast and still plays and sounds great.

First off I'll say I'm one of those people who likes their guitar to stay nice looking. I don't think chips and dents add character ,but to each his own. I think it just looks sloppy. Now if an actual old like say Tele from the 60's was beat up and rusted I'd clean up the rust best I could ,but I'd leave the paint and all the other parts alone because it's a part of history and fixing old guitars up usually drop their value. Collectors want them (paint and all original) as I'm sure some of you know and feel that way. With that said I refuse to pay a for guitar that has been beat up already I want it sparkly and new if it has a new tag on it.

I like my guitars to look as nice as possible, but on other hand I love the fact that the neck is worn on obth my '01 Clapton Strat and '79 Strat. The body of the '79 Strat was stripped and refinished in a clear coat that had worn away with lots of sweat. I loved the way it looked and felt. Unfortunately the guitar's body has been damaged by water so I'm getting refinished in the original creamy yellow white. I'd like the age of the paint to match the age of the neck. As far as dings and rust, well it already has 33 yrs of rust and I'll put my own dings on it.
