Loaded question:

Are many pickup upgrade questions really issues of playing?

I think I can raise this in the Tele forum without gettting my head handed to me...maybe.

And I raise it after playing the newer MIM Tele Upgrades...

Are too few really focused on upgrading their playing?

my gut instinct tells me yes, it is more about "thinking" it will make you play better or what you play sound better regardless of how well you play it. Myself I am a beginner and the minute I get my Hwy 1 Tele i'll be taking the stock pups out of it and changing them out. But for me it's not because I think it'll make what I play sound better, but because i'm sold on the pups I have as being the best ones i've ever heard.

I don't know...so many want to sound like someone else rather than find their own sound in my humble opinion. :?:

Wanting certain kit to find a certain sound isn't always about the expectation (or fantasy) of becoming a better player.

To me, an open chord, or simple arpeggio – nothing technical – can sound sublime with the right pickups/guitar/amp.

I get a lot of pleasure, despite not being a great player, from simple playing, really nice sounding gear and being content that I'm not trying to be as good as, or sound like, so-and-so.

yyes playing style or lack of is a major factor
I would even say a good set up and string change ALWAYS maes me feel better and makes all my axes sound better.
even though I jhave the same setup alot ofmy favorite artist have I do not sound exactly like them ( thank goodness) i sound like me.

Good subject...

In my limited experience I think a lot of guys figure there is a magic tone out there to be found that will make them a perfect player. I know that at my stage of the game a Squier Affinity Tele has better sounds in it than I can get out.

But I think maybe a bigger reason is we just like to change things to our own unique style. Who has left their car or truck in totally stock configuration? Most of us have changed the wheels, tinted the windows, upgraded the stereo, changed the exhaust (to get better tone!), etc. Has it made it a better car, or turned them into a better driver? Doubtful, but it sure is fun to do. :D

Just my thoughts...

While I agree that some people appear to want buy all the right gear so they will sound a certain way and may tend to overlook their own playing ability and the impact that will have on their sound it still remains that some gear simply sounds better than other gear regardless of whose hands are touching the strings. Buying good equipment won't make you a good musician but it certainly can't hurt yet poor equipment can make a good musician appear like he's struggling against it. It will affect performance in some way. When the gear matches the player's need in terms of sound and ease of use he or she won't sound like they're frustrated and struggling regardless of skill level. They'll just play and any struggles won't be related to gear but to ability. It only makes sense to me to try to minimize obstacles by removing poor quality gear from the overall equation.

People do need to understand that the equipment won't solve ALL their troubles, just the equipment related troubles.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
