It seems that Fender forgot to install the metal spacer under the string tree on the new FSR Standard Vintage Noiseless Ash Telecaster. It was missing on mine and was also missing on another forum member's new FSR Tele.

I went to GC and bought a genuine Fender vintage string tree kit (comes with 2 string trees, 2 spacers, and 2 screws) and used the spacer from the kit.

It was an easy fix, but it was an annoyance, nonetheless...

Sometimes things happen...glad it was only a minor annoyance.

MIM Standards don't come with those spacers, or at least if they do now it's a recent change from the older (2005 and prior) Standards I'm familiar with.

That guitar appears to be a a MIM Standard with an ash body and different pickups. It certainly has a MIM Standard neck, so I don't think Fender "forgot" to install spacers on this model.

Did you notice how you had to use the longer screw that came in the package with the spacers? There isn't room for a spacer with the short screw yours came with, unless Fender has changed recently.

I think of spacers as being a '70s thing for Fender, back when Teles and Strats came with two string trees.

Well, it doesn't 'look' like it's supposed to be that way, for two reasons: 1) the angle on the strings coming down from the nut is extreme, and 2) when installed, the tree fits flush to the surface of the headstock, so the only way to install/remove the strings is to run the end of the string through the U-channel in the tree.

Nope. I used the spacer from the package with the original, shorter screw. It fits fine.

Hmm. Well, maybe I'm wrong about screw length; it certainly wouldn't be the first time I've been mistaken.

I don't work for Fender nor care all that much, but this I know - the few MIM Standards I've had did not have spacers. And I know what you get in the little 2-pack because I've bought them before.

My point was simply that Fender doesn't install spacers on these.

Here a pic of a MIM Standard from www.musiciansfriend.com. I don't see a spacer here:

George:

This FSR is, in fact, a MIM Tele.

From this angle, it's very difficult to see whether or not a spacer is in place in your screenshot. What you CAN see is that the channels in the tree are above the surface of the headstock, not directly in contact with it.

Fender may well have designed it this way. If so, then it wasn't very good design, IMHO. In which case, I like my "mod".

I like your mod too!

I've done the same thing - that's how I know about those 2-packs of screws, spacers, and butterfly string trees.

Re-reading this, it appears I was argumentative. That wasn't my intention.

Fenderguy53,
After reading your post I realized how odd I thought this was so I checked out my FSR. Like yours, mine also has the string tree practically touching the headstock. I remember the last time I changed the strings I was thinking about this 'design flaw'. Not a huge deal since I can still get the strings under it without an issue, but it seems closer to the headstock than it should be.

That said, I wouldn't change a thing on this guitar. I absolutely love mine. The playability on mine is fantastic. A top notch instrument from the top notch line we know and love as the Telecaster. Thank you Fender for this special run. I should also mention the special price tag on it as well! :D

I guess we can thank Fender for supplying a way out for us!

Regarding your posts, I took no offense, George. I just wanted to make sure that you were understanding me. Sometimes it's difficult to express nuances and intent in the written word. It's all good.

I wasn't so fortunate, but I like how my "mod" worked out.

Hey, the string tree thing was a glitch. I'm not going to discount the fact that this just wasn't right. That said, I LOVE my VN Ash Tele. I love the classic look, the way it feels, and especially, the variety of sounds that come out of it! It's a keeper, for sure...
