Im thinking about stepping into the tele realm and i was wondering if there were any pickups that would give me a Jimi sound. Something that would handle overdrive and fuzz but still be versitile would be awesome.

Thanks for any input.

Welcome!

Back in 1968, I had a friend who was a Hendrix fanatic. He used a stock, new '68 Tele (RW neck) into a stock, new '68 Super Reverb with a then new, Electo-Harmonix fuzz box. He NAILED Hendrix's sound! Note the year too.

The closest aftermarket Tele pickup set to his '68 Tele set that I've ever heard is the DiMarzio Twang King set (DP172 and DP173).

Thanks for the input Martian. I had actually seen a video on youtube where a guy demo'd an electro-harmonix fuzz with a tele and i'm glad that you mentioned that your friend's tele had a rosewood fretboard because i was planning on getting an Am Dlx 3-tone sunburst tele with RW fretboard.

Thanks again for the info

Check in Youtube for Hendrix`s covers by a young french guy called Matt Rach - great Hendrix playing on a 52 reissue.

As they say, a Tele can do a Strat (if you're good) but not vice versa.

Of course a Tele can do Jimi. Jimi recorded Purple Haze and Hey Joe on a Tele as matter of fact.

Well, went to dimarzios website and checked out the sound clips for the twang king, both neck and bridge, and they sounded great (thanks again martian). Just to keep an open mind tho, are there any other pickups out there that can produce that Jimi jangle?

You're welcome!

These are the only production models I now of where you (as you've confirmed) will get the sounds you are looking for and by gratifying coincidence, at a realistic price. See, I've always operated under the premise that when it comes to the price of pickups, one has to draw the line somewhere. Sure, there are other excellent pickup manufacturers out there who will build you a 1968ish Tele set right down to the most minute detail but you're going to pay through the nose for them. For example, Seymour Duncan's Custom Shop will do it for $160 a pickup (if the price hasn't gone up since I last checked); and then there's the wait. If you think about it, at this price, you're in the ballpark for another (albeit, used) MIM Tele.

There is ANOTHER way to most satisfactorily achieve your end. It won't bust your wallet and yet, MANY players don't even think of it:

Consider a premium, 10 band EQ.

Not only will you be able to mimic Hendrix and whomever else you feel like emulating, but best of all, you only have to pay for "everybody" once!

Excellent, Martian, and related to this topic...before the emergency pickup changes...where do people even have their tone knobs set with a Tele.

I always felt like the stock neck pickup on the Tele could get you close to that tone.

How did you get this information?

My sources say Jimi used a borrow Tele to record the overdubs in Fire and Purple Haze solos, and that is all.
