Throw it loose in the box of your pickup and go 4 wheelin' real fast.

I agree with Tanner 1994,the best way to get that road worn look is to play the guts out of it,lovingly of course. This new interest with relicing and road wear is beyond me,I try to keep my guitars as blemish-free as possible,I play them hard but without causing damage.I can't see the rationelle in defacing a new guitar to make it appear old.I can see someone buffing the neck to get a more comfortable"played-in"feel but as far as I'm concerned anything else is vandalism.

People want the look of vintage. It's as simple as that. I don't understand it, either. Maybe it's so other people will think it really is an old guitar worth plenty of scratch. Maybe it's because they think an old relic guitar looks cool and they wanna be cool too. It doesn't really matter why. You won't understand anyway.

Relic lovers, please don't take that as an invitation to tell me why because I live in the other universe and couldn't care less. To me it would be a slap in the face every time I picked one up. It would scream fake to me every time I looked at it.

Some people don't see it that way and this argument will never be answered to everyone's satisfaction. It's another case of live and let live.

thanks to all who replied. I was curious as how to do it because I do kind of like the look of an older guitar and couldn't ever bring myself to pay money for an already scratched guitar. However, I am not in a band nor do I want to be and aside from playing with some buddies on occasion it's usually me playing in my guitar room in my house and don't really have the ability for the accidental ooops that would give my axe some battle scars. I play about 5-7 hours per week and at that pace it would take the next 30 years to get that effect ha ha. Haven't decided to do it or not, was just looking for some info. Thanks again. All had valid points. Keep on rockin'.

I saw on an episode of "How its Made" on TV about Fender guitars and the Custom Shop. They took a big old ring of keys and smacked them on a guitar to give it a relic'd look. Then they dulled the finish using a buffing machine with a coarser wheel. Thats all they showed tho.

And that's kind of my worry. How could I get that look without making it look done on purpose. It's like when someone does the tint on their car windows themselves. Always looks like crap. ha ha. My tele is newer and has enough nitro on for two guitars.

There are plenty of videos on youtube about how to relic a guitar. Everything from messing up the finish to rusting the metal parts.

The most important is the nitro finish. Just make sure it's 100% nitro.

I just have one tip and it's about rust - don't clean the guitar after you play (hey I know, that one was quite obvious hehehe)- dings and checking will come with time and will be more realistic this way, but if you are going to take the "I have no patience" path, I would also indicate the Relic Deluxe website, though I never tried any of the techniques, once I made him a question about ageing inlays, and the guy gave me some nice tips.

I live next to the beach, so that rusts the hardware quickly, even if you clean the guitar every time after you play. Add to that the warm weather around here and sweating. Actually, I could change my "authentically reliced" bridge and saddles for some brand new, shining ones right now! :)

I've had an EPIPHANY (look it up)....I think I know why a guitarthusiast would want to fake wear and tear on a pristine guitar.....it's because, in this day and age, with 10,000 guitar owners per square mile, and a dwindling number of bars that will pay a decent wage for a band, none of ya'll are EVER gonna get a chance to truly wear that axe out honestly....you know that in your hearts, and it is a sad fact, and wanting to fake wear and tear on a new axe is a way to....what?.....impress girls? Girls don't give a shiite about musicians anymore.....to impress....GUYS? Why would you want to do THAT?

Do what you can to honestly use that guitar......there are too many Justin Timberlakes and Britney Spears out there faking EVERYTHING.....

There are way too many fakers out there in the music world and yes, opportunity to play out and make some cash or just have fun is hard to do and with those opps being limited so is the opp to get some miles on a guitar. I kind of think the roadworn guitar thing is like buying jeans that are faded and made to look distressed. Sometimes that older, vintage look is just about that, the look.

"Most guitars produced today will NEVER relic the way that old Fenders have over time, this is simply because of modern paints and finishes."

To me that's a good thing and is evidence of better quality. :)

I blame it all on SRV. After seeing his worn down guitars everyone wants a fake worn guitar. I seriously doubt that even SRV's guitars was naturally worn. Of course I could be wrong, but I think he should have taken better care of his stuff. :D :D

The difference between a reliced fake worn guitar and a guitar worn by playing is like between a industrial manufactured diamond and a real diamond. And imagine you pay more for a guitar somebody bashed up, I would have punched him in the face! :x :)
