Bought a Fender '52 pickguard for my Tele project and it's awesome.

But I do wonder what's the deal with the surface. It feels like it has a plastic protection foil and dirt and dust stick to it just like when there are. But I cannot peel it of. Tried with my nails and with some tape and lift it of. I know that plastic foil can be real hard to get of if it's aged...

So; Are there a plastic protection foil or is it some sort of nitro finish?

The 52 pick guards aren't normal plastic , they are celluloid and that's the natural appearance of them. That's why it 50's, that's what they used back then.

So you mean there's NO plastic protection foil?

And... by the look of it when drilling it's made of Bakelite.
I think you miss-read my question.

I have one of those black single ply, five hole, Tele pickguards, but It didn't have any plastic when I bought it.

Maybe check with your supplier?

Hmm... Well, it is a Fender original '52 Tele 5-hole pickguard. Purchased in a sealed bag. Where's a better place to ask than the Fender forum? :D

I took the pickguard of this evening and examined it. There was no protecting foil covering the pickguard. And yes, it IS Bakelite.

It was probably some residue from the manufacturing process that didn't get along with my cleaning detergent and smeared when playing and touching it with my fingers.

I polished the edges with micro-mesh pads from StewMac, they where raw looking with whitish shades looking like protecting foil smearing down the edges. That's what lead me to believe there was foil in the first place.

I then polished the surface with furniture polish, cleaned it of with naphtha and lastly washed it with dish-washing liquid and hot water.

That took care of the problem, and the pickguard is now even more awesome!
:D

Sorry dude, I dont know WTF bakelight is.
I just know they are made from celluloid on the 52 and are not covered in plastic. They just shine that way.

Well, Celtic Cyclonus, you need some education then. The information is out there for those who care.

Celluloid is the material used to make film, you know when they had cameras that was not digital. It's also used to make some pickguards, the Tortoise Shell pickguard is made from celluloid. It's created from nitrocellulose and camphor, plus dyes and other agents. When drilling a celluloid pickguard you smell the camphor which have a very distinct smell. It cant take heat well. It is highly flamable and is nowadays only made in Italy. See: Celluloid on Wikipedia.

Bakelite is made from phenol with formaldehyde, usually with a wood flour filler. It was often used as insulators as it non-conductive, in some cases non-flamable, non-smelling and heat resistant. The color is normally black or dark red. Was often used in the '40s and '50 for casings for radios and other home appliances. See Bakelite also on Wikipedia.

A Fender '52 Telecaster 5-hole pattern pickguard is made from Bakelite. Nothing else.

"Henrik Larsson rules!!!" :)

Yes he does, he's a genuine nice guy from my hometown. A real gentleman. The sad thing is that he's about to quit active playing. He has announced having just 2 or 3 matches left. He'll probably be back as a coach or something.

I'm a lifelong Celtic fan, hence the name. I was reading a few weeks ago he is doing his coaching badges at Larg's in Scotland because it's his ambition to manage Celtic someday. I would love that, the guy made me a very happy man!
