I'm facing a problem, it might be GAS, but a decision has to be made because my budget won't let me solve it easily.

I went into the shop this weekend to get some strings. Well, since I'm currently looking for a 69' Thinline, I thought I would browse around and look and see if by chance they might've got one in. "HA" I saw one, hanging all by its lonesome, unfortunately it was a burst (I want a natural and won't take anything else, period). I snatched it from the wall and headed straight to the first Fender Hot Rod amp I could find and started to turn some knobs to setup some twang.

The guitar was great, it felt good (the neck felt more narrow than my strat, but just as thick), it was a little light (which weight is something I'm really not worried about), it was full of all kinds of tones and was suprisingly twangy enough for what I've been wanting. I was satisfied, and thought that now the only thing I have to do is find one in natural.

Now here's the problem. As I hung the tele back on the wall, another guitar caught my eye, a natural epiphone casino, also fresh on the wall. I'm familiar with the sound of these things, but had never gave it any thought before. It was just beautiful in natural and suprisingly for an epiphone, it was immaculate, there wasn't any blemishes anywhere that I could see. I decided to sit down and put it through it's paces and see if it would meet my present day tone requirements. This one felt good and it had loads of tone, it also sounded pretty good acoustically. There was one time there that George Thorogood popped in my mind (I might go back and take my slide with me, hehe). The twang was defintely there and I'm a sucker for full hollowbodies anyway. I'm thinking I might want to get this guitar instead of the tele.

It's funny how you can think about "one" guitar for soo long and think that you have your mind made up, and then all of a sudden, right out of the blue, "BAMM", another guitar makes you forget all about it.

:? Friggin' GAS

Epiphones aren't really that bad. But I think the tele is better still.

I'm sure the tele will be the one I'll end up with. But those P-90's were pretty sweet, they've got alot more dirty growl than my strat. This certainly wasn't an Elitist or anything like that, it was the $599 china made version, but nonetheless it sounded great.

I've always been a little wary of epiphone guitars, but it's always been like maybe one in a dozen before you can find one that's worth it.

:D I'm not a Fender deserter yet, hehe.

If you already own Fender guitars go for the Epiphone.
Also i prefer sunburst over natural on Fender guitars.

Yeah, that thought also crossed my mine. I like bursts, but I'm really not a fan of the three tone burst. I'd rather have a two tone on any guitar, but two tones are rare. Plus that mahogany natural with the pearloid pickguard is stunning in my opinion.

Yeah, that thing had it's own vibe that's for sure. It had that famous tele tone of course. But if you listened real closely you could tell the tone had that woody airy type of thing going on, but not enough to ruin the original tele sound. It sounded like the original tele tone but just a smidge thicker.

Since the epiphone guitar is made in China, and the 69 is made in the US? or Mexico? :?: I would much rather buy something from North America nowadays. Besides, Fender Teles are authentic. epiphone is a terrific company, though, and I'd buy one of their guitars over a Gibson for sure, because Gibson is cheap!

Love that walnut thinline! :P

My God, I would go nuts trying to decide to get a Tele (especially a '69 Thinline) or a Casino. Those are my 2 favorite guitars, I'm a sucker for all things Fender and hollow body/semi-hollow .

I don't know if I'm the only person on this forum with a Telecaster AND and Epiphone Casino, but they are both great guitars. The Casino is also a nice contrast to the Tele in that the hollowbody, relatively small frets and the snarl that the P-90s are capable of creating is a very different from the Tele.

Also, contrary to the experience of some, my Korean built Casino is beautifully made and nicely finished aside from needing a minor fret leveling/dressing, and I replaced the plastic stock nut with a bone nut. The hollowbody archtop, nice body and neck binding, oversized headstock and trapeze bridge and set neck are all nice touches, and part of the reason I actually bought the Casino first.

I LOVE my 2007 Highway One Telecaster, not only on it's own merits, but a bolt-neck solid body guitar with single coils is a great partner with a hollowbody like the Casino. In fact, the P-90s are so nice in that guitar that I almost bought the Fender TC-90 to go with the Casino, but its not different enough...
