Thanks Snowy!

The "new" 69 Rosewood is an incredible guitar - not only is it in extremely good condition for it's age, but it also plays and sounds fantastic. Ditto for the most recent MIJ.

Rosewood Teles have a sound all of their own - they still sound twangy like a Tele, but the overall sound is a mellower tone than say, a 52RI.

hi ajay

I got a mid 80s mij rosewood with an A serial number that I was always a bit dissapointed with, mostly cause the clear finish is really thick like taffee, and it didn't have f tuners like I hoped it would.... it also has a skunk stripe which is unfortunant. I was wondering do you have similar examples of mij rosewoods from this era? that you could comment

the more recent mijs from 2000s look like they have f tuners, but are they any good?

and finally how many of yours have the transition logo vs the spaghetti logo, how many are under the finish?

The clear finish on the 80s MIJs does vary a bit, some are quite thick and other not as obviously so.

It's probably fair to say that the MIJ Rosewood reissue specifications are somewhat confused when compared to the original Rosewoods made in 1968 - 1973.

Another factor that adds confusion is that the George Harrison prototype Rosewood Telecaster was (by all accounts) nothing like the 1969 production Rosewood guitar. This confusion has undoubtedly contributed to the specifications of the MIJ resissues as well as your expectations of a Rosewood Tele.

A case in point - the Prototype Rosewood (and subsequent Custom Shop replicas) has Kluson tuners, not F type. They also had the two piece (non-skunk stripe) neck.

The 1969 production guitars have F type tuners and a skunk stripe neck.

The MIJ resissues have kluson tuners AND a skunk stripe neck. They also have a 6 saddle bridge, the original guitars did not.

I am not really that into the various kinds of Logos on the headstocks - but I think that the MIJs all have a transition logo and that it is under the finish.

The more recent MIJ "Rosewoods" do not compare at all with the 80s-90s Rosewoods. They are Rosewood veneered guitars and essentially a modern standard CIJ/MIJ Tele. They look nice, but are not the real deal.

thanks ajay, so that implies that all mij reissues had the skunk stripe and only the recent US custom shop ones had the two piece non-skunk neck

interesting point about harrisons having klusons, I assumed he had f tuners from that era. so all 69 production models had f tuners and transition decals whilst the Harrison prototype had klusons and a spagetti decal?

if you don't mind me asking, what was the ball park $ on your original 69 rosewoods, I was under the impression that they are very, very expensive

That's my understanding, although there is some evidence pointing to a very early production run which may have been very close to the Harrison specs. These guitars are extremely rare and it's hard to track down info on them.

I'm not 100% sure about the decal.

They are indeed expensive, although the recent financial crisis has probably made a significant dent in thier price. I am not prepared to divulge the prices I paid, however I think somewhere in the $15k - $35k range is appropriate depends on originality, condition and if they are the rarer early production model or not.

Ajay,I just love your recent addition of the 69 Rosewood.I haven't been in the Tele Forum for several weeks and am seeing it now for the first time. Being a Lennon/Harrison fanatic my dream is to acquire at least one example of every model that they played and the Rosewood Tele is at the top of the list, now if I only had 30 large.
