Hmmm... Can't see how a hot p'up would sound dead. Sterile, perhaps?

That's the problem with discussions of this nature; everyone "hears" differently and dwells within his own paradigms.

You offer great advice, though: Play them both and decide for yourself.

Sterile is precisely what I meant. Sorry for the confusion and inability to express myself.

Well, I think it's coming down to a decision between this Vintage Noiseless Ash in Butterscotch Blonde or the Fender Deluxe Blackout.

I like the traditional setup of the VN Ash, but the Vintage-style pickups in the Deluxe Blackout may have more classic tone.

I can get either for the same price, so, decisions, decisions...

The V/N's are a God send for the very reasons you mention. I absolutely LOVE the V/N's on my Tele and would never swap them out for anything except maybe some Kinmans if I ever got the notion. The V/N's have spank, bite, grit, they're touch sensitive and they also have no hum. The Strat V/N's may not be as impressive as the Tele ones but they frikken NAILED the Teles ones, pat. I for one say Thank You, Fender, for creating awesome noiseless Tele pups without the same treble and midrange.

Now you've got my attention.

It sounds like I'd be happy either way (VN Ash or Blackout), but for different reasons. :D

I just read something interesting from Fender, regarding the setup (pickup height) for different pickups:

The recommended pickup height for Standard Single-Coil Tele pickups is 5/64" (bass) and 4/64" (treble).

The recommended pickup height for Vintage-style Tele pickups is 6/64" (bass) and 5/64" (treble).

The recommended pickup height for Vintage Noiseless is 8/64" (bass) and 6/64" (treble).

A contributing factor to the issue that some folks have with the VN p'ups may be that they're setting them too close to the strings! Just a thought.

There are a lot of people with negative things to say about noiseless single coils and for good reason. Don Lace started the trend and Fender picked up on it and commissioned Lace to build their infamous Sensor pups. They were awful. Fender decided to make their own new and improved noiseless pups and had limited success. Most Strat owners feel the V/N's and H/N's lack the dynamics of single coils and they have a point to some degree. My own V/N equipped AD Strat is not as quacky or as spanky as a single coil Strat. My buddy's Strat with H/N's is angrier with more midrange growl but still lacks a small degree of dynamic .... something. I always found Teles to be too bright but loved the spank and bite. The V/Ns are a perfect match with the Tele IMO. Whatever little nuance of tone it is that they rob from the Strat is exactly what the Tele always needed. I have also owned a Strat with the new Samarium Cobalt pups. I think it's possible they got a little closer to their goal with the new ones but at the expense of being significantly brighter and a little hairier.

This is a very insightful, and helpful, observation. I happen to agree that the Tele is a tone machine, albeit a bit on the bright side by nature, and likely a bit moreso with an ash body.

If the VN's do what you propose, then I hope I get that Music123 email confirmation this afternoon that my Fender Standard Vintage Noiseless Ash Tele has been shipped!

Thanks.

A lot of purists bashes the Fender noiseless pickups. Lots of people like them. I happen to like them except for the VN Strat set.

The Fender Vintage Noiseless for the Stratocaster is partly to blame for people not liking the noiseless line of products. They where not good and is considered "sterile". The upgrading of the pots to 500k did improve them somewhat but not enough.

Then Bill Turner was assigned to redesign them and came up with the Hot Noiseless set for Strat. It's a wonderful pickup with a very good string definition, a non-muddy bass, some mid-honk and it goes from clean to distorted with the same excellent tone and definition. And they DO quack. They are designed to used the stock 250k pots.

I also happen to like the Lace Sensor Hot Gold which in my opinion is one of the best pickup you can have. They have similar characteristics as the HN's but without the mid-honk.

I have a Strat with HN's and a Strat with Lace Hot Golds and they are both my #1... Sometime I want the mid-honk sometimes I don't.

For my Jazz bass I use the Fender Vintage Noiseless set. I consider them an upgrade to the stock pickups and is very pleased with how they sound. No pots needed to be changed.

So when building a Tele from parts I had a couple of options and I finally choose to buy the Fender Vintage Noiseless set. I couldn't be happier, if they where any brighter they would have been too bright. When switching from Strat to Tele my amp settings stays the same and I get a very nice Tele sound.

50/60 cycle hum is NOT good tone.

Great feedback, GoranS. Thanks. It's sounding more and more like the VN is the way to go in the Tele.

Thanks FenderGuy53! I'm very happy with them.

There's so many options and the good thing about that is that there are something for everyone. You just have to find it...

For reference: Here's the story about my Telecaster And here's a song on SoundClick where I play it using different pup combinations: Wallys Walking Blues

Like a muscle car? '65 GTO with modern cam, heads, brakes and suspension?

Yes, I can see the attraction.

Folks on other forums (FDP and TDPRI) are now buying these new VN Ash Teles, so we should be hearing some feedback soon, I hope.

If it sounds anything like it looks, it's going to be hard to keep in stock!
