Mine is a 2006 MIM with the wide range HBs.

Can this guitar be converted to something similar to the Black Dove model thats just been released with P-90 style pups?

The WRHBs arent terrible, but I'm looking for more bite and less mud especially at the bridge position. I would love to add P-90s to this guitar.

Hi Cole, and welcome to the forum!

I have the same guitar, and here's what I've been led to understand about the pickups. The original '72 Tele Deluxe did indeed have the wide-range humbuckers, but the reissue models have standard humbuckers. This, combined with 250K pots, causes the "muddiness" you describe. I have heard that replacing the pots with 500K ones will alleviate this. Now, I have not removed my pickguard to verify this. Can anyone confirm or deny?

I hope this helps. 8)

Thanks for the input. I have already put in all new electronics (orange caps, 500k pots etc.). This was a big improvement. LIke I said before, the stock WRHBs are not awful, but I dig the P-90 sound and I think I would get more out of this guitar if I had more growl especially at the bridge position.

Honestly, the 72 tele dlx RI is the most comfortable guitar Ive ever played which is mostly due to the tree trunk of a neck on it. Just a great guitar, but a little tone dead to my ears. I want this thing to scream!

thx again.
