Hey i was just wondering if my telecaster would have a nice sound with replacing the original neck pick up with a "Strat" neck pick up???

Because i have noticed one of Roy Buchanans Telecasters has a Stratocaster Neck Pick up on it. I have never see that done before. I love the sound of Stratocasters!!! Maybe a bit more than a telecaster. But im just wondering if it is a good idea to replace the neck pick up and would it sound like a stratocaster on the neck pick up, once replaced.

I had that thought a couple weeks back. Just to try out. I think it'd probably sound pretty good. But when I lifted my pickguard to see what would be involved, I realised I'd probably have to widen the neck pickup cavity as the distance between the pickup screws on a strat pickup would be too wide. So I gave up on that idea.

Hello Dragz,
Try finding a Nashville Deluxe at you guitar-mart. Granted the strat pup is the center of three pups but I think you could get an idea of the sound.

Dragz, thats a mod many people do and if you like the Strat neck pu sound you just cant go wrong.

I remember Roy had an early 80s Tele with some sort of Bill Lawrence pickup on the neck that looked like a Strat´s but it was not -it was rather a Tele neck pickup with no cover.

If your Tele has a humbucker-sized cavity on the neck position, it´s ok, you will just need to get a new pickguard and drill the pickups there, otherwise, you will need to have it routed, in case your guitar has only a Tele single-coil sized cavity. Let a tech do this for you if you don´t feel secure enough.

Roy used those on the top. On the middle picture and below, you can compare his neck pickup to a Strat-sized pickup.

You can see it well here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EI18-BeVzMI by the 3:50-4:07 minutes mark.

Maybe I just saved you some bucks?

If you can find one of these "Twisted Tele" pickups, it will sound much better than a Strat pickup in the neck position. It says discontinued, but they are out there :

O.......so is there a difference in sound with a tele pickup with no cover???
I now know that a tele neck pickup sounds fine to my ears cause i got last week i just got to play with a 65 Deluxe reverb RI at the shop :) my first time playing through a great amp and im in love with it. So i won't be modding my tele anywayz now.

Some have no cover to bring out more brightness, I think - the traditinal Tele neck pickup cover is made of chromed brass, that "dulls" the sound a bit. Some makers these days are using nickel silver instead, to keep the classic looks with more brightness (among other characteristics, like a taller bobbin). That's what the "Fender Twisted Tele neck" has.

Roy's neck pu sounded just like a Tele to me, so I think you should not worry.
