I bought a USA standard tele and I noticed that after playing there was some black substance on my fret fingers, I washed my hands before playing and this is a new guitar so I'm just wondering what is the cause of this?

Also is it ok to pull of the sticker on the scratchplate and is there a way to do this so it won't leave any stickyness on it?

It plays and sounds great btw, It's the second guitar I've bought now and the difference between it and my starter guitar is crazy.

Thanks.

Sometimes there is a bit of grime/dust on the neck and there could be slight oxidation on the strings that get your fingers dirty. If you wipe off the neck and strings after you play, I find it keeps the strings from getting cruddy.

I usually take the clear plastic film right off of the pick-guard. This will lift any stickers as well.

Best of luck with it!! By the way, we love pictures on here, if you get the chance...

Hi, I feel stupid for not realising that the sticker was on the film  but I took it off and it looks cool now. I've stopped getting black stuff on my fingers after I found my string cleaner so I think it must've been just some dirt or oil on the strings.

It seems badly set up though, I get buzzing when I play some of the mid to high frets, how long would a setup take in a shop(?) because I'll probably get it done in a lunchtime.

I'll try to post pics later, it's a natural finish with a rosewood fretboard and black pickguard.

Congrats on the new Tele...the set up you can do yourself. Just do what the owner's manual tells you to do and you will be fine...it sure beats paying someone else to do it...plus you will then know how to do it for the future!

You can also do what I did. Go to StewMac.com and get their free newsletter for hints. Use your Fender Owners Manual which is a pdf download from Fenders web site. There are many videos on Youtube.com on how to setup and maintain your guitars. Be sure to check those out too; just Google it. :D Best of Luck.
