New here, need some solid advice from the pro's. I have a 1957 telecaster that my father left me. I remember it from my childhood.
My father had alot of guitars and before he became ill he had the body refinished ( big mistake on his part) to a chocolate brown.
Why I have no clue because it was mint blonde. I know the pencil dates are both 57 and the serial number on the back plate is 18293. All parts are original. If you were going to sell it, would you have the body restored back to original blonde and if so WHO would you have do it?
I would love all the info I can get.
Thanks,
Katcann

Welcome!

I am no expert on such things and I could be wrong, but the drift I've been catching is that if a guitar was refinished by the manufacturer around the time the guitar was made, it could be worth equal to the original. Of lesser value but still held in high regard, if it was refinished by a prestigious source many years ago, it would be more valuable than a 'generic' source refinish. Regardless, the least worth would be realized if you had a brand new finish put on it.

Of note: There are specialty artists who could put a new finish on it and indeed, could make it look like it was there from 'birth', complete with a naturally aged and 'normal wear' look if you so desire. Others here could better advise you on who is the best if this is the path you choose to take.

If I owned that guitar, I wouldn't do anything until I had it appraised, whether you're interested in selling it or keeping it and having it insured.

Try www.gruhn.com. I believe they charge $50 for an appraisals and you'll need to provide good pictures. A Gruhn appraisal will be worth more to serious buyers of a '57 Telecaster than an appraisal from your local Mom & Pop music store.

Another possible source for an appraisal is www.elderly.com.

Don't rush. Take your time and get a couple of appraisals from reliable sources so you know what you have before you make any decisions.

Good luck.

I would call Fender...the Custom Shop are great to deal with....they might be able to work with you on restoring the finish.

Just a thought.

I don't know what your intentions are but if this guitar was your fathers then why would you want to sell it. (if that's what you intend)
Now I'm not telling you what to do with it but I'm just saying to make absolutly sure you want to sell it and are not going to have regrets about down the road.
