You can definitely relic stainless steel. I use muriatic acid. You can actually brush it on but it can be very harsh. What you do it get a plastic tupperware container about 8" long x 6" wide and about 3" deep. Make sure it has a lid. Then get a smaller tupperware that will fit inside. Pour some of the acid into the larger tupperware. You only need about 1/4" deep. Put the parts you want to relic into the smaller tupperware. Take the small tupperware and put it in the larger one and put the lid on. So what you have is the parts in the smaller one with the smaller one inside the larger one with the acid in it. The acid never touches the parts it's the fumes from the acid that does the relic-ing. You only need to leave it in for a little while....say like 30-60 minutes. See how the parts look. You can then go longer if you like. Stainless may need more time and you can brush it on stainless.

Can't really help with the date of your guitar. Let me know if you have any more questions!

yea i actually was able to get a hold of some cut (diluted) muratic acid from my grandfather since it was diluted i had to let the parts sit in the solution directly and let them go overnight but it worked perfectly. you cant even tell they are new anymore so thanks for the tip!
