Hello everyon!

This is my first post here with the forums and it seems like a great place. I have played piano since i was eight years of age and have used what i learned with the piano (currently 22 year old male) and transferred what i have learned to playing the bass/guitar.

I have been playing guitar for about a year and i currently only have acoustics. I play on a Gibson Dove acoustic/electric and a Gibson Songwriter Deluxe (did some work for an old farmer and he repayed me with two picks out of his guitar collection)

Anyways i am looking into buying an electric and i have gone around to local places trying out some to see what i would like. I played the Nashville B-Bender tele, American std tele, standard tele, Gibson SG, and the 1972 thinline.

In playing those i have really fell in love with the thinline. My only problem is that i love the thinline, i really love the look of the 1969 thinline (natural with pearloid guard) and from the youtube videos i have seen i love the brightness of the stock pickups over the 72's. The only problem is the guitarcenters and local shops of the world dont regularly carry them like they do the 72's and i would have to pay up front before it came but of course i had 30 days to return it if need be.

Does anyone have any pro/cons of the 1969 tele?

Of course the first thing that comes to mind that everyone seems to mention is the MIM, but the 1972 thinline is MIM and sounds great. The american standard sounds great too but i kind of dig the 1969 just a bit more and its a little more rare to see aroudn as well.

I mainly play in church as i lead the music part of service. I love bluegrass type music as well as any country and some of the classic clapton sounds.

Will the 69 produce too much humming? I understand that having two single coil pickups could give me problems with hum but being that i dont own an electric guitar im not really sure. I am planning on just playing the guitar 100% clean with no distortion of any type.

Any advice would be appreciated.

thanks again!

Welcome!

This whole hum issue is grossly over exaggerated. It is nothing more than a paranoia born of and stoked by, pickup manufacturers perpetuated by those who blindly follow the hype.

Consider this: What is known today as the single coil equipped Telecaster, has been around since literally, 1948 and is still going super-strong today. Artist upon artist upon artist relies on this guitar as his or her first choice of guitars. And if this hum was truly an issue, not only would these artists have, "taken appropriate action" but this model would have died off a long time ago. Further, once the rest of the band starts playing, you'd never hear this little bit of hum any way. FWIW, I prefer single coils and have been playing Fenders with single coils in them for over 40 years. So have millions of other anonymous guitarists. Of note too, I've never gotten a complaint from anyone else either about hum out of any of my Fenders.

Buy exactly what you really want and makes you happy. Do not succumb to this presently fashionable foolishness. Besides, let's say for any reason that you really do have a problem with the hum (which I truly doubt), you could always replace the pickups at a later time. Remember, you have to play it and be satisfied with it, no one else. Again, at the risk of being redundant, I'd simply dismiss any apprehensions you may have about single coils in a Tele. Buy that particular Tele you have your eye on and enjoy it for all it's worth!

Good advice by Martian and I agree.

Also, there are ways to reduce hum if it seems too much for you, such as shielding, using EBTECH and other hum eliminator products, etc..

Good luck!

What Martian and Mike said.

No cons in any of those models. Just 2 different guitars.
