Hi guys,

I'm seriously considering getting a Tele and have a few questions.

I'm after either the American Deluxe Tele or Vintage Hot Rod Tele. One of the differences are that the American Deluxe has individual saddles and the Hot Rod has compensated. I was wondering if any of you guys who have a Tele with compensated saddles ever have problems with intonation?

What do you guys do if you have a 21 fret Tele and you're playing a song that requires you to hit the 22nd fret? Would you prebend or something like that?

Do any of these guitars have a cap in the volume control that'll keep the high end once you roll down the volume?

Thank you!

I would lean toward the Hot Rod. All my Teles have the 3 saddle compensated bridge and I have zero intonation problems. I really like the feel of the 3 saddle bridge as well.

All my Teles have 21 frets so yes, I prebend. do a few times and it comes natural.

I don't know about the cap on the voume control. I changed the stock pots to RS pots and do not need a cap. The tone stays clear when you turn down and the taper is smooth with a silky feel. I have used a cap in the past and a .0033 works well and I have also used a 150k ohm resistor in parallel with a 680pf cap.

I love the fatc that the Hot Rod has a mini-HB for a neck pickup. Keep us posted and if you get one put up some pics!

Thanks for the reply, Billy. I was leaning towards the Hot Rod myself but I will have to play it and try it out. I should be playing some guitars this weekend so I'll report back next week all being well.

I read somewhere that the brass saddles make for a much better tone, would you agree with this yourself?

I have experimented with different saddle materials and I just thought out of all the materials available (including titanium) brass sounded best.

Post back after you play those guitars!!

Well guys I have returned and have a new guitar to show you all!

I tried a number of guitars in Guitar Guitar - firstly was the Fender 50s Hot Rod Tele. It sounded good but I just didn't like the neck, which is a 7.25" radius. Perhaps if I have of played it longer I would of got used to it but I wasn't feeling it on the day. Next was just the Standard 50s Tele. Again the neck wasn't that comfortable and I didn't like the fact that the neck pick up was very muddy and the guy in the store told me that you had to solder in your own capacitor to get it sounding like a proper Tele neck pup! This wouldn't be a problem but I dunno, I'd prefer to have a simple guitar that I can literally just plug in and play and get the sounds I like.

Next I tried the American Telecaster Deluxe with the maple neck and I loved it. Very easy to play and I had no problems with string bending - I think it has medium jumbo frets so I guess that these help a great deal. I tried it with a rosewood neck but there's just something about the feel and the slight difference in sound of the maple neck....I can't really explain it but the maple felt, and sounded better.

I ended up getting the maple neck Tele Deluxe and it's a great guitar! I will upload some soundclips soon but I really need to change the strings and the intonation is way out for me too.

Soundwise, compared to the Vigier, I think the Tele is a lot punchier and has more character tonewise. The thing about humbuckers, I find, is that they are just there and have very little character. The Tele has a slight twang which I like as it gives the guitar character IMO.

Here are some pictures!

Congrats on the new guitar! It looks really cool. I am like you when it comes to necks. I like larger frets, flatter radius (9.5"-10") and has to be maple. Keep us posted when you have it all set up with the intonation and everything!!

Thank you! I'm going out today to get some new strings so I should have everything set up by this evening. It's a very nice guitar indeed and I love the fact that it's so simple to take care of and to play.

The Sunburst finish on your new guitar is awesome. What amp are you playing through?

Cheers,

You made a very wise choice Binge, I'm not just saying that because I have Tele Deluxe  I went out with the intention of getting a 52 RI, I liked the look of a Tele Deluxe hanging up. Asked to play her, and BAM!!! Fell in love, it's a class axe, enjoy her buddy.

Atta bot Binge. Just got me a Tele yesterday. Yours looks great. I don't know what you played before but these things are a dream. From what I read you can pick them up and play, pretty much bullet proof. I like that. Finally got the strech out of my new strings. Played/practiced about 2 1/2 hours today. Luv it. :D

Nice guitar!
For the record I prefer the 6 saddle bridges on both strats & teles, and i prefer 9.5 radius to 7.25. Not that I have anything against the vintage styles, just prefer the modern spcs.

Yes the best thing I like about the Tele is that you can just play it! There are no complicated bridges or tuners to worry about. Simple is best in my book.

Yeah the modern specs are my favourite too.
