I must say I know not a thing about electric guitars. But I have a old PV and a 93-94 tele with lace sensor pickups. Why did fender put this type on this guitar? They sound good to me but why would fender put them on if every one liked the original type that first came out on tele's. Really new at researching this so this is the point where the learning begines. Oh and by the way the guitar... it is RED.

Thanks

Not everyone likes the stock pup's, as witnessed by the many posts here by people who are changing their pup's. I have a '98 Am Std Tele, and changed the stock pup's to SCN Noiseless and I love them. Some don't like them, but for ME it was a great decision.

It's really all just about what sound YOU want.

The Lace Sensors are a low noise pup designed by Bill Lawremce I believe. Again some like them, and some say they don't have the 'vintage' tone. But it still all boils down to - what sound do YOU want.

Are they good? Depends on what you want out of your pup's. If they sound good to you, they're good.

I love the Lace Sensors on my Strat Ultra. The Ultra is a rock guitar, because the pickups are waay overdriven. The Lace Sensor was designed by Don Lace, not Bill Lawrence, although they are now joining forces to sell pickups. See this link:

http://www.lacemusic.com/

You likely have a Telecaster Ultra, with Laces. I like these pickups, but if I had them on a Tele I would opt for the Lace Gold sensors. These gold pickups don't have the output of the Blue or the Red versions, so they will sound more like the original pickups, without the noise.

Luckily, I have one Gold PU on the Strat (Middle position) and it provides the normal strat bell tones sound in the 2nd and 4th selector positions.

The Golds is Statocaster pickups, as are the red, and blue. And since being in the Telecaster forum, lets talk about Lace Tele models. For a Telecaster Lace have just three pickups:

- T100 (neck)
- T100 (bridge)
- T150 (hot bridge)

I'm also wondering about those Tele models because there's so little to read on forums about them. Whenever Lace's comes up people starts talking about the Strat models. Gets kinda confusing.

I have the Lace Hot gold (13.2k set) in a Stratocaster and love them, but it would be interesting hearing from someone who actually tested the TELE models.

Tele Plus models aren't very common, and are fetching top dollar on Ebay.

I also have a Strat Ultra which shows up rarely on ebay, in fact we just had a pretty long post on the whole plus series in the Strat lounge but the Telecaster Plus is even rarer than those .One of the guys from Radiohead plays one. The thing with the lace pick ups is they sound the best and you get the most out of them the higher up you have them to the strings.

Never heard them called "Ultra", but I like it! I will admit though, the red and blue Lace Sensors, in my tele "ultra", really put the tele closer to a Les Paul tone, than a Tele tone. I have one with the vibrato bridge, so that is making the tone will be different as well.

After talking about the Lace pickups and T-100's here, I may have to change my stock pickups now; but they have to say Fender Lace Sensors on them. They have to be made for Fender by Lace with a Fender logo or forget it.
You can also find some used pickups occasionally at Sam Ash and GC on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood in the accessories display case, even some there that are vintage. Right place, right time...If you see an Ultra pickup then grab it! It may not be there next week.
