Has Fender ever issued a Keith Richards artist series Telecaster?

That's a great question and would make a great model! I think there was a small run of them done at the Custom Shop but I am not 100% certain. Maybe one of the CS guys will reply!

Keith said in a video they actually made one or two for him to play but they were too new. He told the guys @ Fender to play 'em and beat 'em up a while first. Then he'd play them. The sound he got on Gimme Shelter is from his Telecaster and amp. I couldn't see the amp logo but i think it was a Fender reverb because he was using reverb. I saw this from the front row of Rich Stadium in Buffalo. It made a strong impression on me that day, in the summertime anything seems possible. It was a beautiful day outside and 75 degrees. I'll never forget that moment. Yes, thats when I first knew what a Telecaster could do.

The last I heard is that the Custom Shop made some in the mid-90s and those were sold exclusively in Japan. I don't know how much of it is a rumour, but Fender does (did) make some limited models for Japan only, from time to time.

Fender Japan still makes a "Keef-esque" Tele model.

You guys realize Sweetwater Music and the Fender Custom Shop are doing a tribute model of keef's guitar without his name on it:

Hell, just read the discription. it hints at Keef at least TWICE:

Quote:
The Sweetwater '51 Nocaster Relic is the result of a direct collaboration between Fender's Custom Shop and our very own guitar gurus. The Sweetwater '51 Nocaster Relic draws its inspiration from the heavily modded Teles and Nocasters that followed the British Invasion of the 1960s and it likely sounds perfectly at home tuned to Open G. With a classic Tele pickup at the bridge with a Seymour Duncan '59 humbucker at the neck, the Sweetwater '51 Nocaster Relic is a sweet axe with a cool "skull ring" vibe.

buy it here, but hurry: It is going pretty fast!

It looks like he forgot the 6th E-string...completely!! There isn't a bridge saddle for it.

I think Keef is overrated. Mostly he copies Chuck Berry, with open chording, so it is easier on him, than for us standard tuning players. I like the sound of his guitar, but he isn't someone to emulate, unless you want to sound dated.

Yes, that's on purpose. Open G chording sounds much better and is far easier to play without the 6th string. You pretty much don't use it in that tuning anyway so it saves having to mute it.

Keith's guitar choice, I've found, isn't particularly noteworthy. He has said on a few occasions "give me five minutes and I'll make 'em all sound the same." I've seen them a few times, and although he's stuck with Telecasters and ES-335s and -355s, his sound is more or less the same: very loud, and very clean. Post-Ampeg, he began playing through a pair of narrow-panel, high-power tweed Twins. These amps are set at about 3/4 volume, with slightly different tone settings. The only effects he uses are a Fulltone Tube Tape Delay (which is set up behind the amps and manipulated by the tech) and a few others for specific uses (a phaser, for instance, on 'Shattered').

The only really unique guitar that Keith plays on stage is Micawber, his main '53 Telecaster with a brass bridge & saddles (only five!) and an old PAF in the neck position. Listen to 'Sleep Tonight' from Dirty Work and you'll understand what I mean: that thing absolutely sings.

A quite superficial analysis of his guitar work, IMHO.

You can see the high E string saddle in the picture and it looks to me like the magnets are still there.

I haven't thought of Keef Hartley in years.

Not the high E, the low E.
