Very happy with my Highway 1. Sounds great and plays great! Looking at it closely I noticed mine is made from 4 seperate pieces of alder glued together. I'ts very hard to tell and probably only noticable as it's 3 colour sunburst finish. I think this is another difference between the Highway 1 and the more expensive models.

I had a 2005 Highway 1 but upgraded to an American Deluxe Tele. I like the better hardware and pick ups of the Deluxe. I do a lot of studio work with my Tele so the noiseless pick ups are a big plus. The American Deluxe also has a bone nut and a molded hardshell case as opposed to a gig bag.

I hope this isn't overkill ; )

Finish:
The HWY 1 is a nitrocellulose laquer (satin) and the Am Std is a Polyurethane. Vintage Fenders are nitrocel and in my opinion, it's a big part of the tone. Something about the way the finish breathes and allows the wood to age. Poly is many times more durable though.

Neck:
Both necks are the same C shape and Poly finish, but the HWY1 comes with Jumbo frets vs. the Medium Jumbo on the Am Std.

Pickups & controls:
Hwy1 has Hot Tele pickups with the Greasebucket Tone circuit (Rolls off highs, doesn't add bass).
The Am Std comes with Am Std pickups and the Delta Tone system (high-output bridge pickup and No-Load tone control)

Bridge:
Hwy1 has vintage-style bridge. The difference is 3 saddles vs. 6 on the American Tele. To most, they will never know the difference aside from the look, but you can't fine tune the intonation on a vintage style as well. This is because 2 strings share the same saddle and you have to find common ground, vs each string with it's own adjustable saddle. I have to be fair, this really is nit-picking, like I said most would never hear the difference, but on my '62 Esquire, I hear it despite many hours of micro-tuning, even by a national pro luthier.

Tuners:
Both are Fender trademarked, but Hwy1's are made by Ping and Am Std's are made by Schaller. To me, there is no discernable difference.

I think the highway one telecaster is the best value you can get for the money. I am very happy with my highway one, it sounds great, fantastic rosewood neck, superb finish and fabulous attack - for a brandnew guitar.

For four Months I'm waiting of a Baja Tele at my Local Dealer in Germany, and then I tried a highway one and that thing blow me away.

The American Tele has the wrong bridge and no nitro finish. Get the Highway One if you find some.

I picked the honey blonde :D
