I've got a bunch of different guitars, but I've never had a Tele and I've felt the calling recently. The only reason to do it, though, is to get the real Tele feel and sound and coming from Strats and Les Pauls, I'd love to understand the key elements that you guys think I should be looking for.

Of course there is the aspect of what feels right and sounds right when I'm playing it, but with so many options, I'd love to hear where you think I should start looking.

Thanks!

Aside from the usual (fretting out, etc) a Tele should have a good twangy sound, but also a more mellow sound using the neck pup. I think that ash bodies and maple boards on Teles sound better than other woods. Just my two cents!

Look for ones that have a nice balance between the two pickups. The neck pickup, while usually common on teles, should be a little bit darker than that of a strat, but not by too much. Then it will be just a crappy pickup. I really like Teles, and their tone when through an overdriven amp is much fuller than that of a strat, and sounds closer to a les paul.

Still gotta have a strat, though.
