I will post pics when I receive guitar next week. In the meantime...

Ebay NGD

For those of you who don't know about "Foto-Flame" Fenders, they are very unique. Made in Japan in 1994-95, the finish is a photographic film re-creation of wood flame which is laminated on the body and neck. It obviously differentiates itself from the traditional solid color Teles. The body has a Strat-type body scoop which gives it smoother lines. This one has passive EMGs. I usually don't buy a guitar without playing it, but I did alot of research on the Foto Telecasters and they are considered excellent players. Many people think the Foto finish is "cheap", but most guitar finishes are sprayed on, anyway. These Fenders are made of basswood and have a maple or alder cap. Whatever folks think, these Japanese Fenders were extremely well made at the Fuji-gen plant. I traded emails with a few Foto-Flame owners, and they said they would never sell them. The price I paid was right at market per the 2009 Vintage Guitar price guide.

Do any of you here know anything more about the Foto-Flame Fenders? Thanks.

I've seen several foto flame Strats which look amazing. Please post pics once you get it as I've never seen a Tele.

Have played a couple of Japanese Tele's (and Strats) and the quality is just superb.

Cheers.

If that Tele sounds half as good as it looks, you've won a watch my friend. That is a stunning looking guitar, congrats. I can only echo what mhainz has already said, my CIJ Tele is my favorite guitar by far.

We are just having this discussion over on the Strat side http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... hp?t=27177

Can you please post any info you have on the Fotoflames? I'm going to grab the one I found.

Thanks,

Rick

Arrived late last night. Plugged it in, and it was very underwhelming...almost anemic. I pulled open the volume/tone pot cavity and found that the EMG pickups are active, not passive. Replaced the battery, and it rocked my world! Restrung it today, cleaned the crud off the pots and switches, shined her up...good as new. Photos tomorrow. 8)

Hi there. The guitar you have purchased is actually called a MIJ Telecaster Deluxe and they were made for a period in the mid 90s.

They are almost a cult guitar in themselves and have a strong following.

They feature one of, if not the nicest, playing necks ever fitted to a Tele.

The model did not come fitted standard with EMG pickups, so yours is modified.

Many of these came with the Foto Flame finish over a basswood body, but they also made a sunburst ash bodied version which are to die for.

A characteristic of this model is the reversed switchplate.

You are right about the pickups. Someone popped in the EMG-T active pickups to simulate the Nashville Tele - Tex Mex Tele singles in the bridge and neck, and a Strat Mex in the middle. Sounds great. Also, I like the switch on the bottom so I won't hit it while flailing about in superfluous rock mode.

UPDATE: This guitar is so good, I used it in a session to record two rhythm tracks and the lead track on a blues tune that our band used as a demo. This Tele rocks, for sure.

I could be wrong on this...but on the CS forum Mike Eldred talks about foto flame and he states that they take paint/stain etc, and use foil to get the effect. The foto flame site says it is a film...I think that is incorrect...
