I was thinking of putting a bridge cover on my HW1 Tele's vintage bridge. Does anyone have any experience with them. I think they look sharp on a Tele but my concerns is does it damage the paint and does it rattle or even is it worth it. Please respond with your experience with Tele bridge covers. Thanks :!:

Since most never use them, Fender has pretty much quit making them for modern models (vintage usually has them). One reason - you can't palm-mute the strings very well with the cover on. But, they do look sharp.

They have one, and only one use: holding cigarette butts!

I love my ashtray. It does look great, and looks do count. But, they are right, you never see anyone actually playing with the cover on. I have just rekindled my love and use for my tele (a 1972 custom, brown with Maple neck) So, I keep trying to use it. I really can not hear any reason to use it. Right hand work seems to take priority over looks here.

Get one and keep it on, but put it aside while playing. You shouldn't be smokin' anyway, except on your Tele!.

Ok, I'll play devil's advocate. You hardly, if ever see Albert Collins without one, and while watching part 3 of the Beatles special this weekend, there was George Harrison playing a Telecaster with, surprise, the bridge cover in place. I think if those guys liked it I wouldn't argue with them.

Good Research, I didn't even know that George played a Tele. It is hard to argue with those guys. I'll keep experimenting.

I had one on my first tele. I took it off more to pick the strings over the bridge pu than any thing else. I still have the cover but got stupid and sold the Tele in 75 to buy a Gibson L6-S bad mistake. I've had 7 strats since among others but never bought another Tele they got scarce when I was looking. Now I'm building 2 of my own and I plan on using that cover on one of them.

George used a rosewood Tele model in the Let it Be movie. I have seen pics of Paul playing an Esquire believe it or not!

The ashtray bridge cover could make a ring impression into the finish and possibly could rattle. I think it is less likely to rattle though. And there is no palm muting with it installed.

So, does anyone know the technical reason that Fender designed the bridge cover. Is there any sound effect, any wear benefit, any reason at all?

My 1972 Tele Custom is 34 years old and does not show an marring in the finish due to the cover.

The cover was to hide what was considered, at the time. the ugly bridge. Purely for cosmetic reasons the bridge was covered by the 'ashtray'. As stated above most players remove it when playing, some replace it when taking photos. Makes no sound difference. Might rattle some, but can be bent so it doesn't rattle. Same thing for the Strat bridge covers.

one of the other reasons I took mine off back in the 70's Most all country-western players had on and The rock players took it off. Being an impressionable young kid I new the Rockers had to be right. lol Now I play more country than Rock. Who Knew!!!

But the Blues are still the KING
