stratele52 is talking about the black rubber pad under the neck plate here:

Image

I’m not aware of any “Corona” models (newer MIA guitars) that had this pad. While it’s not detrimental to the guitar, it’s not original.

Other thoughts:

The neck pickup route looks like it was enlarged with a chisel – perhaps to get the Armstrong pickup with the base plate to fit.

Image

The neck heel should have stickers and/or a date written or stamped on it and possibly other markings. A previous owner could have removed these.

Image

Neck mounting holes appear crudely drilled, as if done without a drill press. Finish in the neck cavity indicates a do-it-yourself finish or a repaint.

Image

Strings load through the bridge (“top-loader”) instead of through the body. This generally indicates an inexpensive copy (or vintage reissues such as a ’59 Telecaster) but is not consistent with the “Corona California” neckplate.

Image

Tuners appear crooked. Also, the flat portion of the back of the headstock doesn’t look like any Fender Tele I’ve seen. It’s too “sharp” where it joins the neck in my opinion.

Image

String trees are either not Fender or if they are (American Standard type), they have been painted black. Of greater concern is the lack of black plastic or wooden trim surrounding the truss rod adjustment hole. Only MIK Fenders have this bare hole (“Lite Ash” Telecaster, Koa Tele, FMT HH Tele, etc.). Most inexpensive copies from the "far East" have this bare hole.

Image

The decal has obviously been applied on top of the finish. This is inconsistent with Fender Teles with the ‘70s logo. The only Fenders that have a decal on top of the finish are vintage reissues such as the American Vintage ’52 and ’62 Teles and some Custom Shop instruments. Decals are easy to counterfeit. Sealing them under a nice clear or amber finish is not.

Image

All of these observations plus the obviously aftermarket parts (pickups, bridge & saddles, oval jack plate) indicate to me that this Telecaster is not a genuine Fender product - or if it is, it is highly modified. Due to the choice of parts and the pinstriping I’d assume someone probably spent a good bit of time making this a good looking and playing guitar. The wiring looks okay too. I suspect it’s either a Squier or an inexpensive Asian copy with fake decals on the headstock.

Good news. You have an exceptional example that is very rare. Made from the most exotic tonewoods of the plywood variety, this is a desirable piece in some circles. You're lucky to have this guitar. It's just not a Fender.
