Very cool, adey.

That's a great Tele to experiment with and I'm glad you're having fun with it.

One thing you might want to try for fun is a four-way switch, which will let you get the neck and bridge pickups in series for a "beefier" tone that will drive a tube amp a little harder. It's sort of like turning it "up to eleven".

It's a cheap mod and you don't lose your other three sounds. You'll need to run an extra wire to/from your neck pickup but if you can solder well enough to change pickups this won't be any trouble for you.

Work on this guitar proceeds until:

Having liked the Seymour Duncan STR1 I fitted in the neck position, I bought it's matching brother yesterday for the bridge. This was the STL1 Vintage Tele p/up. Started to fit it last night but couldn't get it to fit in the route. The brass plate on the bottom of the p/up means I was 1/4" short on width. I don't have the sort of tools for this work and I didn't want to botch it, so I took it in to the Tech I use this morning. He's going to tweak the cutout so I can drop the p/up in.

I popped in the local mega gtr superstore next door, just to try out a few Teles, to get a feel for what I need to be aiming for in my little tele project. Results were something of a revelation.

The Mexican Tele was not great it has to be said. It felt stiff and unresponsive, though this could be set-up issues. The sound was lacklustre too. Tried a new American std in natural finished ash which was elegant and lovely to play and in it's sound. The real suprise though, was the Squier Classic Vibe in a stained natural finish. It was a superb guitar - classily built and finished, lovely high gloss neck and it sounded glorious, with all the grunt and snap you could wish for. Not quite as good sounding as the US standard, but nearly £500 cheaper!

Anyway, awaiting the return of my Tele for final set up tweaking etc. Trying to resist a trip back to the shop for the CV Squier..

All done.

I have to say that a cheap guitar has become an expensive cheap guitar, but I guess 2 new Seymour Duncan pickups does that every time. Also I didn't count on the routing issue, but my Tech fixed that problem right up at an extremely reasonable cost (and renewed/refixed my earthing wire at the same time for free).

Have to say I'm now very pleased with the results after tweaking it a bit earlier today. Getting the pickups balanced was a bit tricky. The vintage neck p/up is quite mellow, whilst the vintage bridge p/up is seriously fierce. Had to wind that one down a fair few turns..

Greatly enjoyed this first dip of the toes into Telecaster territory. I'm finding tones that I previously thought of as coming out of a Gretsch, amongst others. Pleased to finally have an example of this iconic guitar in my collection. It looks good stood in a row of it's younger Strat brothers!
