I take I need to drill different mounting holes for a six saddle bridge than a three saddle?

Maybe, maybe not. And realize, the MIM and MIA bridges have different hole spacing. That's why I have a six saddle Fender MIM bridge still in the bag in my Tele case. (grin)

I've yet to own an MIA. I didn't know that!

Why?

Beats me. Heaven help me if I get another MIM v. MIA thread started here but some have said it's done to keep the parts from mixing. (sounds a little racist, doesn't it?) Or maybe some of the hardware is turned out by different factories.

Really, a bridge is just a stamped, folded and welded metal plate. So either cultivate a friend with good measuring tools, or take your 'axe' into the store before buying. And depending on the vintage of what you have and what you're looking at, there may still be small differences. I really think they have different factories stamping them out and there's variations.

Pray tell, I still question the original intent of swapping a two-fer for an individual string bridge? You can whine that the intonation is not *perfect*, but you can get it darn close. Closer than most people will be able to tell. And more than a number of folk have praised the sound of the brass saddles, which may or may not be true...but they sure look cool.

Unless the bridge is busted, I'd say leave it. Tune up and play!
