I just got a 09 highway 1 tele yesterday and the jumbo frets I thought I liked seems when I play a chord the note goes sharp with any pressure at at. Is this normal or do I need to play the tele different than I am used to. I'm thinking about taking it back. :(

This is normal with Jumbo frets. Try putting less pressure on your chords.

Thanks bro. I was bumming! trying to play like my acoustic and actually I guess the pressure makes the notes sharp. But putting less pressure is the ticket and I've decided to keep my Tele I always loved the sound of and enjoyed watching otherd jam on. :D I'm blessed to have it.

lots of people like jumbo frets because you don't have to apply as much pressure so you can move along the fret board faster. I'm not one of them. I think they act more like speed bumps and the one downside is sharp notes if your not careful. But I have a pre_upgrade highway 1 with the medium frets and that plays like a dream.

I love the jumbo frets on my Tele. A year ago when I was shopping for a Tele I tried a Thinline with tiny frets so small almost like a pencil mark on the fretboard. I replaced it on the wall and bought a Highway one with the huge frets, so much easy to bend strings. Of course you have to adapt to avoid sharping notes. Good luck. :)

I'm an enthusist that wonders what some of the other members think of the jumbo frets on the Highway One models. Please let me know what you think of them. Thanks

The more I play it, the more I love it. I'd say it's like playing a scallopped guitar. When the string touches the fret you really need to stop applying pressure. A little adaptation for a great reward. :)

Thanks for you replys. The more I play the jumbos the more I like it. Certainly down the neck (the open position chords) area the more the sharping. But the middle and upper part of the neckI dont notice the sharping. Pressure applied is key. I did switch from the stock 9s to 10s EBs, seemed to help some. Maybe 11s may be better. But the adjustmemts arn't rocket science and I love this Tele more every time I pick it up. As of a matter of fact I just pulled the pick guard sticker off cause I'm keeping this Tele. It sounds and plays awesome! I also polished mine twice so far because of the nitro finish. I'm in no hurry for the road worn look. The slightly shiny sunburst looks great.

I agree with zum about the speed bumps, but I do like my '05 Honey Blonde w/maple, mediums and hot noiseless pups.

What I'm wondering is that rigtht now the strings I have on it are quite light - would a thicker guage help reduce the "sharping"?

I just finished putting new strings on my Highway One Tele tonight - I moved up a gauge from 9's to 10's. I don't SEEM to be "sharping" as much. On the other hand, I realized how much I like 10's over 9's... :)

After my guitar has a couple of weeks to adjust to the higher string tensions, I'm thinking of putting 11's on there - any thoughts? (I'm wondering if I'll notice an even greater decrease in "sharping")[/quote]

I think it's a safe bet that big, heavy strings will stay in tune better than minuscule .09s. You can do just about anything to a guitar strung with .11s and it will stay in tune (unless, of course, it has a Bigsby; then you must refrain from hurling it onto the stage and falling down with it strapped on). I've been playing with .11s forever, on guitars with medium jumbo frets and jumbo frets, and never had a problem with 'sharping' notes.

You might need a slight intonation adjustment, no biggie.

'Personally like a really nice amp with any guitar, as it's a whole bunch of the sound. 12" speakers just seem to be the "natural" for guitar, with multiple 10s being a close second.

And as you play more, the fret size won't matter between guitars; you will automatically adjust, like wearing differnt pairs of shoes. And 10s are a nice gauge for Teles; 'agree completely.

Best of fortune.

I see alot of the newer Fender Teles and Strats are going to the narrow jumbos, anyone know the difference between them and the regular jumbo frets?
