frantic, I think/thought the same thing about the neck & body. I sure hope Fender can clear some things up for me about this guitar. I will say that even if it turns out to be bogus that it plays wonderfully and sounds great. Will be a keeper to me either way.

Yes, a 9V box. I believe it powers an under-bridge type pup. It's a 3-way switch with aft being the bridge pup and volume controlled by the lower knob. Mid position is both neck (lipstick) and bridge, and forward position is neck only with volume controlled by the top layer of the "wedding cake" knob and tone by bottom layer.

Pop the neck, I would not be surprised to see a warmoth or similar brand there. Either way looks like a sweet pawn shop prize.

I believe that this guitar, contrary to the belief of some here, is real, if for no other reason than it's obscurity. To build and hawk a Partscaster as a real Tele is one thing; to create something as strange and unique as this and then attempt to pass it off as a prototype would undoubtedly result in some checking. Hopefully FMIC can help you determine what, exactly, it is. The only other thing I know about it is that it's cool!

That's a neck from a MIM '60s Classic Tele. Decals, front and back, look legit and are in the right locations. Truss rod, tuners, string tree, size and number of frets all make me 99.9% sure that's a '60s Classic neck.

I bet someone created and added the Fender R&D logo. Does that decal look different? Look at it with the light hitting it at different angles. Is it on top of the finish or underneath?

My guess is the body is a Warmoth or other custom job; same with the pickguard. Bridge is likely homemade (but looks very well done) and I'm guessing the piezo bridge electronics (powered by a 9V battery) are from Stew-Mac or possibly harvested from an acoustic/electric guitar.

In short, it's a Tele built from parts - some Fender and some aftermarket.

I think it's a great guitar!

From Fender Consumer Relations:
Hi xxxxx,

Well, from the pictures it looks like you got your hands on a guitar that was made by R&D but got out into the public. Unfortunately there is no documentation as to what the guitar since the serial number doesn’t show up in our system. All I can really say is that it looks like a cool guitar and that you should enjoy it.

I know that’s vague, but it’s really the only info we have on it.

Best regards,

Scott Marceau

I ran the serial number on the neck at guitardaterproject.org and it says it is a MIM from 2007-2008.

I'm fairly stoked. I had it for sale on Craigslist for about twice what I paid for it, but the ad is coming down. If for no other reason than it's just too different to let it go.
