You're right! That is easily a leather pickguard. I'm getting my roommate. These are some great shots at some vintage Boss! Roomy finally admitted defeat after seeing the pinwheel pickguard I just showed him. I'll order a pizza with part of his 5 bucks and offer him a couple slices for being a good sport. That is clearly leather. That's it! That's the pic! I love that bearded Bruce pic. That shirt Bruce is wearing is priceless! Looks like my Grandma's handmadel quilt. I just love that color pic. There is so much going on there. I shamelessy downloaded that shot into my guitar archive folder. I have to print that stage shot out for the boys in the band. They will get a kick out of that. That shot is Priceless! That's the era that I just loved Bruce's music best. Heart of the 70's right there. Just a classic Bruce shot. Again--that shirt. Deinitely harkens back to the 70's when anything went. Love his old sneakers too. Funny. Pretty good detail of that pickguard there. I have never paid attention to that puickguard before stumbling onto this site. Now I look for it all the time in old Bruce photos. That is the only colored pic I have seen of it. Too bad the leather-era kinda died out. I think Bruce had something there. Think Bruce still has those leather-colored Pickguards still?

Also in the color pic, did you notice Bruce's knitted cap lying on the stage. Yep, stocking caps were another thing he had a pechant for in the 70's. Check out the Hammersmith Odeon, London '75 concert, you'll see him sporting a knitted cap.

I got some info posted to me on another forum by Chunhall about the whereabouts of Bruces leather BTR c1975 PG with the "Man under the street light" scene.. Chunhall posted the following link:
http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/ ... rket_booms
The link is to an article on rock memorabilia. About 10 paragraphs down, the article says a New York dealer/collector by the name of Kosinski has "the worn leather pick-guard that was on Springsteen's famous Fender Esquire guitar throughout the Seventies".

My buddy, Huntster, emailed Kosinski who replied saying it's been sold to another private collector. Too bad it's in private hands; we probably won't be seeing it anytime soon.

BTW, I sent Pyramid Leather a 8-hole Telecaster pickguard to use as a template, which he sent back to me with the finished leather pickguards. If you're thinking of doing this, you might want to find a cheap Strat pickguard to send him.

BigKahune

I pasted the tidbit on Bruce's leather pickguard for all to see from the link that BigKahune sent--

Ed Kosinski
Who: Memorabilia dealer; married to the daughter of a late real-estate magnate
Collection: Kosinski has one of the world's biggest Bruce Springsteen collections, from the leather pick-guard that once covered Springsteen's famous Fender Esquire guitar to items as obscure as old datebooks and report cards. He also owns guitars from Clapton, John Lennon, Townshend and Kiss.
Prize possession: Lennon's necklace

More info from the BigKahune link I read that---- this Ed Kosinski guy paid $210,000 for that John Lennon necklace. That sucker better of had some serious diamond rocks on it and be made of solid gold!

I'll take the Bruce leather Pickguard for a mere $100,000 then. Put it on my American Express Johnny!

So he sold it to another private collector? If I had that leather pickguard, I would never sell it. Of course there is always the big dangling golden carrot being offered. Everyone has a price. I'll bet back then Bruce just gave it away not knowing how collectible it would be today. Just like my baseball card collection my Mom threw out with my Mickey Mantle rookie card in it. Didnt bother me when she did it back in the day. I still raz her about it to this day. I wonder where Bruce got it from originally? Anyone know the answer to that. Who has Bruce's E-mail address? Lets write him.

Spanish Johnny--

That's cool that your keyboardist doubles as your sax player. Very slick. You gotta do "Jungleland" That is the most famous sax solo ever in song in all of rock classic rock and roll history! I gotta go with Glen and Glen again on that one. He gets 2 votes for playing 2 instruments.

Dude-- I e-mailed these guys about Bruce's pickguard but I never got a response. Dude--they arent gonna sell. I want that PG so bad. But I gotta tell ya--these here are just as good. I saw them in person. I'm ordering 1 or 2 myself from the leather guy. They are killer! I think this guy is gonna be busy with these. Ok dude--rock on and learn Jungleland.

Hah-- I will agree with you Huntster on the great sax solo in Jungleland. You are obviously Bruce-biased. I will consider getting the guys together and do a once-over on it and see if our singer can hit the notes. Glen is gonna have his hands full as he is going to have to do the synth on the violin parts and pick up the sax on Clarence's part. Yikes. But hey--he wants to do it. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thats OK with the original leather Pickguard. I'll keep my $110,000 clams. That will buy me a lot of backup leather pickguards from our friend the pyramidleather guy.

BigKahune--

I dont think the leather pickguard will work on a strat. Talking to my rommate about it, he doesnt see how it will support the electronics. Which I agree. I can see how on a tele it will work. All the support of the pots and pickups are on the pickguard itself. A tele pickup is screwed into the body and the pickguard is just a cover. On a strat, the pickguard serves as part of the active build. I reached a realization that unfortunately I need a replacement stiff plastic pickguard. Too bad too. I really want to put it on this. Unless that thicker pickguard is extrememly stiff. It literally cant bend, it has to be really stiff. How stiff is that thicker pickguard BigKahune?

Actually--what if I got the thinner one and simply attached it on top of another plastic pickguard? So basically it will be a skin covering just for the looks and the plastic guard underneath will be the support for the electronics. That should work shouldnt it? What do you think of the idea?

Yes, sounds like a good idea. Best case scenario: You locate and purchase a thinner style (possibly single layer) plastic Strat pickguard; send it to him for use as a template; when he's done, he glues the leather to the plastic and sends it back to you.

That's a good idea right there. Now the only thing I have to hope is that there is ample room on the leather pickguard between my pickups for him to paint the entire width of the alley scene. He may have to go a tad narrower to squeeze the whole scene in between the neck and middle pickups. I will take a tape measure and measure it out on the life-sized tele pickguard you posted.

One more thought, maybe a thin plywood pickguard would work better for gluing the leather on - better adhesion. The edges of the wood could be painted/stained the color of the leather.

Spanish J---

If it were me, I would buy a plastic strat pg since like BigKahune said, the leather guy is gonna need a template anyway to cut out your strat leather pg out, and then when he returns it back to you with your new leather strat pg, I would sand the top of the plastic pg with sandpaper to give it a rough surface to adhere the leather pg to. Use contact cement or whatever adhesive you think best. Using the adhesive and and the mounting screws, it shouldnt go anywhere. But I would sand the surface to make it rough enough so the cement has something to cling to. Just my 2 cents. I bet that would work sweet. Dude--it would look killer with the 'Man Under the Streetlight' on there.

I e-mailed and called him but I havent got a message back. I'm going try again on Monday. He may be away or busy for the Holiday, who knows.

Thanks Huntster. And that's a good idea for Spanish-Johnny's project.

Very nice job BigKahune. I love the leather pickguard. So that is modeled after what Springsteen used? Huh. Its funny he had an Esquiure with a pickup in the neck. This may just be the best-looking tele I have ever seen. BigKahune goes to the top of the class! That is a Class Act. I love this forum. You people have so much talent. I wish I could do have this stuff.

Hey you guys--Thanks for all the strat pickguard suggestions. Thats a good idea about gluing the leather one over a plastic one. That may do it. Monday, I am heading over to the music shop and lay all this information on my guitar guy over there. I am no good at this. I can play alright but I can't build.

Very nice with the album cover comparisons BigKahune. Image blows me away. They are fabulous. Better watch out, you may have to go into production with these leather pickguards.
