I am having a difficult time navigating, so I hope this gets posted. I thank you for your rapid respons...very unexpected and much appriciated. I have an issue. I am data rich and wisdom poor, but as I understand from research, the {diagonal route} channel to which you refer was not implemented until post 1970 in USA manufactured Tele's. Let me post a picture so that we may continue this very appriciated discussion. RB.

I'm not sure what you're reading (research), but I have a 2008 '52 AVS Tele. The 52 American Vintage Series Telecasters are made to the same specs as the original 1952 Teles, right down to the cloth wrapped wire - and mine has the unconnected diagonal route, just as I mentioned above with the ebay photo link.

Here's another link to a 1963 Tele body - some what beat up and possibly somebody's mod project at one point, but you can plainly see the unconnected diagonal route was still implemented in 1963.

BTW, you have to paste in the direct link to your hosted photo between the two "Img" markers.

From you feedback I am becoming convinced that the body I have is just a cheap copy. Hope this link to the photos works.

The wood doesn't look like ash to me. It looks like alder which is what the Joe Strummer bodies are made of.

The route pattern looks modern, but the Joe Strummer routes were vintage style. Here's yet another link, this time to a Joe Strummer body on ebay with the routes looking very much like the 52 RI Tele. Also notice the bar code in the bridge pup route.

I think what you've got there is an after market body that was put together with an after market neck in a DIY project and then given a relic treatment to look like a Joe Strummer.

So, continue your own DIY project on it. No problem there. Good luck.

BK,

I agree. Thank-you for your time and feedback. Very much appreciated.
I will continue to make a fairly nice tele for one of my kids. RB.

Welp - I got the leather pickguard. Looks great on the guitar. As promised, here's a new pic of the guitar and a closeup of the PG.

Love your pickguard! I need a new pickguard on my guitar. My over-hyper bass player whacked mine and cracked it the other night on stage with the head of his bass while doing a crazy 360 spin next to me. Saw him out of the corner of my eye and turned away so I avoided getting a wack-job but my strat didnt. Cracked the pickguard and broke my tone knob. He is still in the doghouse for that stunt. Asked hin--What the F%$#? Got a few laughs from the crowd on that one. Not too happy with my bass player though. After seeing yours, it got me thinking that a leather pickguard may be the way to go. It wont ever crack when hit and it looks stellar! Love the design. Anyway, I did an internet search for replacement pickguards and I saw your link so I clicked on it cause I was curious about the Springsteen reference since we play Springsteen songs live. So it lead me So I got curious and read the entire thread. We play some older Springsteen songs -- Rosalita(always a crowd pleaser here in the Philly area)--- Born to Run(never gets old)-- Kitty's Back(Love the guitar intro) So I have a hankerin for the Boss' muse. I didnt know he used a leather pickguard back then. Looks killer. I love that old color pic of Bruce playing on stage. That shirt is wild. I love that telecaster of his. Sure looks like your guitar in that pic. When my roommate gets up in a few hours, he is gonna $@!& when I show him this. He is gonna dig your rig. Man, you did a great mod job. I'm really liking your pickguard. Did this guy make Bruce's? 'Man Under the Streetlight' --that is so Bruce---Poetic. Is there an E-mail address or a website to this leather guy? Nice work. Tell him great job!! Love it! Killer guitar mod Big Kahune.

Spanish Johnny--

Yeah-- that Bruce Pickguard "Man Under the Streetlight" that Big Kahune had made is sweet. I have seen it in person!! We live close to each other and I'm always running(Really--I run!) over there to see the latest mod! Its so sweet-looking!! You can see all the 3-d reliefed detail and the color is beautiful in person!! I cant stop looking at it every time I go over to his place. I'm awestruck at that Bruce mod guitar. I cant put it down once I'm there. Its the holy grail of all Bruce-mod guitar projects. Its the only one like it on the planet! Its gotta be. I mean the closest attention to detail is made on this mod. The decal placement--the pickguard--the neck---the graining is also very close! Which is hard to get on Bruce's guitar! Stunning!!! Bug him to put up a pic with the Bruce shoulder strap on it for even more amazing true-to life Bruce modding. Sheesh!! Amazing!! I love that thing.

Wondering if you have a sax player in your band for the Clarence Born to Run Sax solo parts. I would kill to here a band play these songs. Coming to the mid-Michigan area anytime soon? You're right about that intro to "Kitty's Back" Killer!!! "Da Da Da Da Daaaaaaaaaar" Sweet!!!!!!

Thanks for the props guys. Man, I completely forgot to include the leather worker's info. He normally works on renaissance fair stuff - leather armor, grieves, masks, etc. Below is a photo close up of the second pickguard he made for me (I wanted a backup). It shows off the nice tooling on the brick wall brick wall and the detail in the painting. It's also a bit thicker than the on I have on the guitar and the edge is beveled. I'm very happy with the way they turned out. The cost was $75 each, although that might change now that he knows how much work was involved. He's the guy's info:
Don at pyramidleather@yahoo.com
I would point out he missed the doorknob, keyhole and awning over the lower window. Those are minor points a purist might want included.

Hah- thanks for the high-marked band appraise. On your question about the sax- Our keyboardist, Glen also plays sax, so he does Clarence's solos in all our Bruce songs. He has double-duty playing Clarence and Roy. He has been urging us to learn "Jungleland" for that great sax interlude solo, but I don't know if its a good fit for a bar gig. Crowd gets restless on the slower songs. They dig the faster over the top rocker Bruce songs a little more. Though "Jungleland" is such a great song and all that we all feel its so epic that its made for an arena type setting. Glen disagrees but he is outnumbered. Also our singer is afraid his voice would crack on nailing all those upper-ranged Bruce "Oh-Oh's" at the end of Jungleland. We get the best crowd reaction from the Bruce tunes. They are so fun to play live! I see why Bruce digs doing so many concerts.

My roomate wanted me to tell you that he is insanely jealous of your Bruce mod setup. He couldn't believe that Bruce used a leather pickguard until he saw the cloesups of the black and white pics you posted. I have to thank you cause he owes me 5 bucks over this. I bet him 5 bucks that Bruce used a leather pickguard on the Born to Run album. Roomy swore Bruce used a black plastic one on the Born to Run album. So I bet him. He is still trying to get out of paying me. I keep telling him to look at the pics! Hah! Its killing him. He knows he lost the bet. That is definitely a leather pickguard from the pics you have here.

Your Bogner amp/guitar photo is majestic to say the least. You have a nice setup there. I used to own a Bogner alchemist 112 tube. Nice unit. The guy sure did a great job on your leather pickguards! Hats off to him. I have a strat so that may be be trickier to make. I think the pots are hooked to my pickguard. I believe on teles, the guard is just a cover. I have never taken my guard off, but now since its broken, I will. If the pots arent connected, then I can go for it. If the leather is sturdy enough, maybe I can anyway. I will get back with you on this after I remove the pickguard. Nice pics BigKahune.

Cool on the fast five. Here's another cool pic of Bruce in the around 73/74 with his still pristine Esquire and the (at that time) practically new BTR leather pickguard - in color.

Image

Bruce was into leather goods, like everyone else in the early to mid 70s. Here's a link to a article (in Spanish): Scroll down to the 4th image and you'll see a young, rail thin Bruce, about 1973 with his Esquire, sporting an earlier engraved leather pickguard with a scene on it (there's no mistaking the iconic graining of that guitar).

And thanks for the props on my Tele rig and Bogner. Love 'em.
